Why do we love this case?

The Lucky Dip Case is back! The first time we did this, we broke the internet. This time we’ve bubble-wrapped the servers because they’re in for another beating.

Every case contains the same eleven wicked wines, including some of our absolute faves here at the ‘fo. More info on them below, and they’re all good things. All mofo standard - i.e. nothing we haven’t enjoyed ourselves.

Then there’s the added excitement of seeing which one of these world-beater wines you will receive as your twelfth.

The twelfth wine is the wildcard and could be any one of these:

An iconic Penfolds Grange 2021 - worth $1000 - (1 in 100 chance)

Hewitson Cask 66 Shiraz 2023 - worth $450 - (1 in 25 chance)

Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve Shiraz 2023 - worth $200 - (1 in 10 chance)

Ivyburn First Minister Shiraz 2022 - worth $55 - (at a minimum!)

Each box contains one of these epic wines. The odds vary per wine, but each one is a centrepiece wine, worthy of some truly special occasions.

We should say up front: there are no returns on this - click here for case terms and conditions. As it’s a Lucky Dip, it would be unfair to other mofos running in the draw.

The easiest way to guarantee to get a bottle of Grange is to go out and buy one for yourself. If you, like me, don’t have $1000 handy, this is definitely your best (and cheapest) option! Heard enough already? Pop that case in the cart and cross your fingers and toes! Otherwise, read on for a bit more info on all those lovely wines:

2x Di Fabio Winemaker's Selection Cabernet Blend 2018

Red — Cabernet Blend

McLaren Vale — Australia

Plush, rich blackberries and plums with a raspberry like acidity and wonderfully soft tannins. There's a good lick of oak but nothing distracting, a hint of eucalypt but it stops short of menthol. This wine's time in the cellar has done it absolute wonders - soft, smooth, silky, yet powerful, plush and ripe. A great wine from one of McLaren Vale's greatest producers.

You'd pay $50 full price.

2x Hollick Red Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Red — Cabernet Sauvignon

Coonawarra — Australia

This is jam packed full of black and red fruit - currants and raspberries mix with bramble and plums. The earthy and greener notes chime in late, backing up that initial fruit with some savoury depth. Classic Coonawarra - completely delicious. Estate fruit from the famed Hollick vineyards in Coonawarra, this is cab sauv like Aussies know and love. Certainly, a little bit of age behind this number has helped to fill out the mid palate, making it rich and dense with threads of fennel and mint throughout. It's very hard not to enjoy this wine - and we're speaking from experience.

2x Pauletts Clare Valley Shiraz 2021

Red — Shiraz

Clare Valley — Australia

Pauletts have been doing this in the Clare Valley for decades. And this shiraz is exactly why they keep getting invited back to every wine show they've ever even walked past. Rich, generous and completely inviting - dark plum, blackberry, cocoa and mocha on the nose, with liquorice, aniseed and a warm kitchen spice character woven through a fleshy, supple palate. The tannins are fine and perfectly weighted, and the finish is long, balanced and just a little bit addictive. Clare Valley shiraz doing what Clare Valley shiraz does best. At a price that makes grabbing more than one bottle the obvious move.

You'd pay $28 full price.

2x Aramis White Label Shiraz 2022

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

This little beauty is punching above its weight and then some. From an enviably located vineyard whose fruit is in high demand from very prestigious Vale producers, this small batch producer holds back some parcels to craft this delicious drop. Every single review on this wine mentions value for money, and they're talking full rrp when they do, so this is an epic deal here. It walks a perfectly balanced line between opulent and elegant, earthy and fruit-forward, intenisty and complexity.

You'd pay $25 full price.

2x Peter Lehmann Layers Red 2021

Red — Shiraz Blend

Barossa — Australia

This bombshell Barossa blend comes from a producer so iconic we’re shocked they even had any stock for us - and trust us, that alone should get your heart rate up. A cheeky, yet well thought out shiraz blend, this one's all about bold flavours and a silky-smooth texture. Great stuff. In the glass it pops a vibrant crimson - extremely bright and alive. From the first sniff, you start picking up dark cherry, spice and a little something savoury that tells you this isn’t your average mid-week red. Shiraz brings the power and depth, tempranillo locks in that firm, savoury edge, and mourvèdre throws in its trademark wild, earthy charm. Then grenache swoops in like the glue that holds the whole thing together, smoothing the palate and lifting the aromatics. The end result is a silky, seamless blend with real Barossa muscle but none of the sluggishness. Plush fruit, spice, texture and length for days.

You'd pay $20 full price.

Wild Card Wine #1

Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2021

South Australia

99pts Halliday Wine Companion | 99pts The Australian | 100pts Ken Gargett | 97pts Campbell Mattinson | 4.3 Vivino (All Vintages)

Grange is synonymous with excellence and prestige in the global wine lexicon. It is, with barely another runner in the race, our nation's leading lady – the zenith, the be-all, the end-all, the one-and-only. There is no moment too grand that won't be elevated – and appropriately celebrated – with Grange.

"Quite simply, a wow wine. Maroon/black in hue, one simply gets lost in the nose, just endlessly sniffing the most glorious cassis notes, along with black fruits, blueberries, coffee beans, aniseed, mulberries, delicatessen meats, tobacco leaves, plums and graphite. The wine is seamless, intense and immaculate with knife-edge balance. It simply dances with joy. There oak is there, undeniably, but it is so well handled that you almost have to think twice. So complex already, and yet so harmonious and decadent. Silky tannins, bright acidity, the intensity never wavers for an instant and there is incredible length — Rutherglen muscat length. This is as close to a perfect Grange as I can imagine. Fifty years, if you think you can last that long. A Lord-take-me-now wine, if ever there was one. 100 Points." - Ken Gargett

Wild Card Wine #2

Hewitson Cask 66 Shiraz 2023

Barossa Valley, SA

98pts Wine Orbit | 4.1 Vivino (All Vintages) | Five Star Halliday Rated Winery | Small Batch

From one of our favourite Barossa producers, who have brought us multiple 98 and 99 pointed drops before, comes this incredible special release shiraz that will continue to improve for the next 20 years. Careful maturation in specially selected highest-grade French oak, followed by barrel selection of the finest juice, has helped craft this unparalleled expression of the country's top grape/region combination. Compellingly complex, the nose shows rich, ripe plums and bramble fruit with black cherries. Supporting is an excellent intermingling of charcuterie, black olives, cocoa and liquorice. The palate is simultaneously refined and powerful, with beautifully ripe tannins and a clean line of acidity supporting an incredibly long finish. This is premium Barossa at it's absolute best.

Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve Shiraz 2023

Barossa Valley, SA

97pts Wine Orbit | 96pts Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot | 95pts Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot | 4.4 Vivino (All Vintages) | Five Stars Wine Orbit | Old Vine

Hooley dooley. Old vine mastery. This has all the ethereal complexity that you can only really achieve when harvesting fruit from ancient vines. Gnarled and moody in the glass, as it's allowed to drink in a little air you'll see it evolve and open up to you. Something special to be sure. It’s always exciting to come across a wine with such presence in the glass. This has a powerful black fruit core that really ties the wine together, making it full and complete. The aromatic power of the wine walks the walk when it comes to the palate - glossy and full and rich. The fruit profile swarms the mouth; brambly, briary, bunchy. That freshness and focus of the fruit is followed by spice, coffee, and toffee nuance. This is immense in every sense of the word.

Wild Card Wine #4

Ivyburn First Minister Shiraz 2022

McLaren Vale, SA

96pts Wine Orbit | Five Stars Wine Orbit | Killer Vintage

This deeply personable shiraz expresses ripe red berries, black pepper, spice and blackcurrant . Full-bodied and complex, the ripe characteristics of rich, broad fruits, and overt chocolatey notes tell you that, odds are, you're in the great McLaren Vale region. In other words, this is a strikingly regional wine that expresses all that is great about this phenomenal region. Fragrant American oak is displayed with intensity and vibrancy and, along with an already present texture and structure, set this wine up for a very long life in the cellar. Drink now - 2035 (at least).

Frequently Asked Questions

This Lucky Dip offers the thrill of discovery combined with exceptional value - you're guaranteed eleven quality red wines plus the excitement of a wildcard bottle that could be worth up to $1000. The concept mirrors the traditional wine futures market where collectors invest in unknown quantities, but here you're getting immediate gratification with curated selections from boutique and iconic producers. It's essentially a wine lottery where every ticket wins, but some win spectacularly.

The odds are structured like a premium wine allocation system - Penfolds Grange 2021 (worth $1000) has a 1 in 100 chance, Hewitson Cask 66 Shiraz (worth $450) is 1 in 25, Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve (worth $200) is 1 in 10, and everyone receives at minimum the Ivyburn First Minister Shiraz worth $55. These odds reflect the rarity and prestige of each wine, similar to how wineries allocate their most sought-after releases to loyal customers.

Returns aren't accepted because this operates as a legitimate lottery system where fairness to all participants is paramount. Allowing returns would compromise the integrity of the draw and potentially disadvantage other customers who might have received different allocations. This policy mirrors how wine auctions and allocation systems work - once you're in the draw, you're committed to the outcome, which maintains the excitement and fairness of the lucky dip concept.

This collection showcases the diversity of Australian red wine terroir, featuring everything from Clare Valley's elegant Shiraz expressions to Coonawarra's structured Cabernet Sauvignon styles. The various regions represented demonstrate how different climates and soils influence wine character - from the mineral-driven wines of cooler regions to the rich, full-bodied expressions from warmer areas. It's like taking a guided tour through Australia's premier wine regions in a single case.

James Halliday's Five Red Star rating represents the pinnacle of Australian winemaking excellence, awarded only to wineries that consistently produce outstanding wines across multiple vintages and varietals. These producers have demonstrated mastery of their craft and terroir expression over many years, making them highly sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs. Having multiple Five Red Star rated wines in this collection ensures you're receiving bottles from Australia's most respected and technically proficient winemakers.
