Why do we love this wine?

First produced in 1960, Bin 389's inception is closely intertwined with that of Australia's most-famous wine, Grange. The plan was to create, in Max Schubert's own words, 'a dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other', in other words, this is Grange's little sibling. A wine of prestige and power with a potential drinking window up to 2055... drink it, age it, buy it just to look at, it's a truly special wine - enjoy it however you like.

Limited to 1 x 3pk per customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bin 389 holds a unique position as Grange's 'little sibling', sharing the same winemaking philosophy and techniques that made Grange Australia's most famous wine. Created in 1960 by legendary winemaker Max Schubert, it was designed to be part of a 'dynasty of wines' with an unmistakable family resemblance. This connection to Grange's legacy, combined with its exceptional aging potential until 2055, makes it one of Australia's most prestigious and collectible red wines.

This 2023 vintage has exceptional longevity with a drinking window extending to 2055, giving you over 30 years of cellaring potential. The Cabernet Shiraz blend's robust tannin structure and full-bodied nature make it ideal for long-term aging, during which the cocoa, liquorice, and raspberry flavours will evolve and integrate beautifully. You can enjoy it now for its youthful power, or cellar it to experience how these premium South Australian grapes develop complexity over decades.

The remarkable consistency of 95-96 point scores from respected critics like Andrew Caillard MW, James Suckling, and Wine Advocate reflects Penfolds' unwavering commitment to quality and their mastery of the Cabernet Shiraz blend. These critics recognise the wine's perfect balance of power and elegance, its complex flavour profile, and its exceptional aging potential. The high Vivino rating across all vintages also demonstrates that this quality translates to consistent consumer satisfaction year after year.

The rich, full-bodied character with cocoa, liquorice, and raspberry notes makes this wine perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think premium beef cuts like ribeye or wagyu, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's South Australian terroir and powerful tannin structure also complement game meats and rich, sauce-based dishes where the wine's complexity can shine alongside bold flavours.

Absolutely - a 3-pack allows you to experience this wine's evolution over time, which is essential for understanding premium Australian reds. You could drink one bottle now to appreciate its youthful character, cellar one for medium-term aging (10-15 years), and save the third for long-term cellaring to experience its full potential. Given the wine's prestige and 30+ year aging window, having multiple bottles also provides flexibility for special occasions or as an investment in your cellar.
