Why do we love this wine?

If you don’t know by now, we think it’s time for you to loop yourself in. The Pirramimma Limited Edition Shiraz comes from the fruit out of the famous “War Horse” and “Ironstone” blocks. The vines are old and what they lack in quantity (yield), they make up for in superb quality. Full bodied, but balanced with pepper and spice, there are just so many layers to discover in this wine. Laden with luscious, ripe blackberries, earthy blackcurrants, mocha, hints of cedar and a dollop of liquorice, you’re in for a treat with this divine, velvety red.

Ken Gargett

Ken Gargett

"A seriously good McLaren Vale Shiraz, with a very long and generous future ahead of it. Again, 2022 shows that it deserves to rank with the top years for the region. The colour here is a near black/maroon. The wine is very approachable and that generosity is immediately apparent. We have notes of mocha, licorice, soy, plums, coffee beans, delicatessen meats, chocolate, leather, warm earth, blackberries and cocoa powder. So much going on here. Supple and delicious, there is a creamy texture, fine balance and excellent length. Enjoy this for at least the next ten to twelve years." - Ken Gargett

Ray Jordan

" From the get-go you are going to enjoy tucking into this mighty impressive Shiraz. It’s opulent and immensely powerful with masses of dark fruit revealing characteristic dark spicy plum, chocolate and toasty oak. The palate is firm with its chalky tannin influence combined with well-managed oak. A subtle and gentle blue fruit character reveals. This is a classy wine. Score: 95/100 Cellar: 15 years" - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

These famous vineyard blocks at Pirramimma feature old vines that naturally produce lower yields but exceptional fruit quality. Old vines develop deeper root systems over decades, accessing unique soil minerals and water sources that younger vines cannot reach. This stress creates more concentrated flavours and complex tannin structures, which is why the fruit from these specific blocks commands such respect in McLaren Vale winemaking circles.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for Shiraz, allowing the variety to develop its signature pepper and spice characteristics alongside rich fruit flavours. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, preventing over-ripeness while maintaining the full-bodied structure that McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for. This terroir perfectly complements the old vine fruit, creating the wine's distinctive balance of power and elegance.

The complexity comes from multiple factors working together - old vine concentration, careful vineyard selection, and McLaren Vale's unique growing conditions. When vines are stressed by age and lower yields, they channel energy into developing intricate flavour compounds rather than quantity. The interplay between primary fruit flavours (blackberries, blackcurrants), secondary fermentation notes (mocha), and tertiary development (cedar, liquorice) creates the multi-layered tasting experience that unfolds differently with each sip.

The exceptional ratings from Ray Jordan (95pts) and Ken Gargett (94pts) indicate this 2022 vintage represents outstanding winemaking and ideal growing conditions. These critics are highly respected in Australian wine circles, and such high scores suggest the wine demonstrates perfect varietal expression, excellent balance, and strong ageing potential. The consistency across multiple expert reviews confirms this isn't just a good wine, but an exceptional example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Allow the wine to breathe for at least 30 minutes before serving at 16-18°C to unlock its complex aromatics and soften the tannins. Start by noting the initial blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, then let it evolve on your palate to reveal the pepper, spice, and mocha characters. The velvety texture and liquorice finish will develop further as the wine warms in your glass, showcasing why old vine fruit creates such a rewarding tasting journey.
