This isn’t your over-the-top, bruiser-style Barossa shiraz. It’s a more considered, finely cut take - savoury, layered, and with serious depth under the bonnet. Alkina are one of the Barossa’s most progressive producers - a crew that marries old-school regional intuition with seriously clever, modern winemaking kit.

Why do we love this wine?

This lot know the ground, they know the science, and when they put the two together like this, the results speak for themselves. This is one of their standout wines - polished, confident and quietly impressive from first sip to last. The aromatics come at you first: red and blue fruits lifting out of the glass, threaded through with graphite, subtle spice and that cool, stony edge you only get from limestone-grown shiraz. On the palate it’s all about balance. Silky fruit texture up front, then a tightening line of cool, shaping tannin that keeps everything focused and long. There’s power here, but it’s disciplined - nothing flabby, nothing forced. Power and polish, in perfect rhythm.

Frequently Asked Questions

The limestone soils of the Barossa give this Shiraz a distinctive cool, stony minerality that balances its natural power and richness. Unlike many full-bodied reds that can feel heavy or overwhelming, the limestone influence creates a tightening line of tannins that keeps the wine focused and elegant. This geological foundation allows the wine to express both intensity and finesse, making it more food-friendly and age-worthy than typical blockbuster styles.

Biodynamic and organic farming practices enhance the wine's expression of terroir by promoting healthier soil biology and vine balance. This results in more concentrated, pure fruit flavours and better integration of tannins, which you can taste in the silky texture and disciplined power of this Shiraz. The farming approach also contributes to the wine's impressive aromatics, as healthier vines produce grapes with more complex phenolic compounds that translate into those lifted red and blue fruit notes.

The consistent high scores (98pts from Andrew Caillard MW, 97pts from Decanter) reflect the wine's rare combination of power and elegance that critics prize in premium Shiraz. Being ranked #2 in Decanter's 2023 Barossa Shiraz report demonstrates its ability to stand out in a region famous for exceptional Shiraz. The wine's balance of concentrated fruit, structured tannins, and mineral complexity represents the pinnacle of what modern Australian Shiraz can achieve.

The wine's graphite minerality and structured tannins make it exceptional with grilled red meats, particularly lamb with herbs or beef with peppercorn sauces that echo the wine's subtle spice notes. The cool, stony edge also pairs beautifully with game meats like venison or duck, while the silky fruit texture complements rich, aged cheeses. The disciplined power means it won't overwhelm dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or truffle-based preparations.

The 2023 vintage's combination of concentrated fruit and limestone-derived structure suggests excellent ageing potential over 10-15 years. The current silky texture will evolve into more complex secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and dried herbs, while the graphite minerality will become more pronounced. The disciplined tannin structure will gradually soften and integrate, allowing the wine's inherent power to express itself with even greater elegance and complexity as it matures.
