All the things we love about the region; all the power and guts of a proper Aussie shiraz with vibrant fruit and a peppy natural acidity. The best of both worlds, elegant yet bold, with a hint of toasty oak and gentle, silky tannins.

Why do we love this wine?

Amicus is Latin for 'friend', "We wouldn’t open a bad bottle of wine to share with our loved ones and we don’t want you to, either.", that's this producer's mantra and pretty much their whole philosophy, and it's no better embodied than in this little number. A bottle made to be shared. Rich and robust with lively acid and plush, textured fruit, the layered tannin structure brings an element of elegance and allows for a surprisingly long drinking window (now to 2036). The already famous 2021 McLaren Vale vintage, much like this wine, is a gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving.

Gorgeously styled and expressed, showing dark fruit intensity, game, clove, dark chocolate and toasty oak aromas, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate offering plush texture backed by layers of silky tannins, making it sturdy and supple simultaneously. Richly flavoursome and delicious. At its best: now to 2036.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021 McLaren Vale vintage is already famous for producing exceptional wines with remarkable concentration and balance. This vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions that allowed grapes to develop intense flavours while maintaining natural acidity. The result is wines like this Amicus Shiraz that showcase the region's ability to produce full-bodied reds with both power and elegance, earning recognition as a standout year that will be remembered for decades.

This Amicus Shiraz has an impressive drinking window extending to 2036, giving you up to 15 years of cellaring potential. The wine's layered tannin structure provides the backbone needed for long-term ageing, while the lively acidity will help preserve freshness over time. As it matures, expect the bold blood plum and chocolate flavours to integrate further, developing secondary notes of leather, spice, and earthy complexity that make aged Shiraz so rewarding.

The rich, robust character and chocolate notes make this Shiraz perfect for hearty dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef brisket, or game meats. The wine's plush texture and blood plum flavours also complement aged cheeses, particularly strong cheddars or blue cheese. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or grilled eggplant with herbs, as the wine's full body can stand up to umami-rich flavours without being overwhelmed.

A 95-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that represents the top tier of Australian wines. This score reflects the wine's perfect balance of power and elegance, complex flavour profile, and impressive ageing potential. Wine Orbit's additional five-star rating and 'Killer Vintage' designation further emphasise that this bottle represents exceptional value and quality within the premium Shiraz category.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast, creates perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop intense flavours while retaining crucial acidity. The region's diverse soils, from ancient sands to clay and limestone, contribute to the complexity and structure found in wines like this Amicus. This combination allows McLaren Vale Shiraz to achieve the full-bodied richness that made the region famous, while maintaining the elegance and balance that sets the best examples apart from heavier, more extracted styles.
