Just when we thought the Auld family couldn't get any better, we tried this 97pt beauty. This is what we mean when we say full-throttle Barossa shiraz - bold, honest, and bloody delicious. This is the region doing what it does best, delivering rich, ripe fruit, plenty of oak and zero apologies.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This one bursts with dark cherry and blueberry fruit before melting into layers of cocoa, toasted spice and just a hint of cedar. The palate's thick-set and velvety, with plush tannins holding everything in balance. There's real weight here but it's not clumsy - the structure carries all that power with confidence. Time in French oak (minimum 12 months) has rounded things out beautifully, adding polish to all that Barossa grunt. The oak integrates seamlessly, lending warmth and complexity without overwhelming the fruit or making things feel overdone. Crack it now with a leg of lamb and it'll show all its generous, fruit-forward character, tuck it away for a decade and watch it evolve into something even more complex and seductive as the tannins soften and tertiary characters emerge.

Frequently Asked Questions

While many Barossa Shiraz wines can be overpowering, The Ernie Reserve demonstrates remarkable restraint and balance despite its full-bodied nature. The 12+ months in French oak has been expertly managed to integrate seamlessly rather than dominate, creating a wine that showcases the region's power whilst maintaining elegance. This approach reflects modern Barossa winemaking at its finest, where structure and finesse are prioritised alongside the region's naturally generous fruit character.

This 2020 Shiraz is beautifully approachable now, showing its generous fruit-forward character perfectly. However, its plush tannin structure and full body suggest excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. During this time, the primary fruit flavours will evolve into more complex tertiary notes like leather, earth, and dried herbs, while the tannins will soften to create an even more seductive drinking experience.

The wine's full body and rich tannin structure make it ideal for robust red meats, particularly the suggested leg of lamb where the wine's power can match the meat's richness. The cocoa and spice notes also complement game meats, aged cheeses, and dishes with earthy mushrooms. The French oak influence adds enough sophistication to pair beautifully with herb-crusted beef or even rich, slow-cooked stews where the wine's complexity can shine.

The 97-point Wine Orbit rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and elegance - a difficult achievement in full-bodied Shiraz. Critics likely recognised the seamless oak integration, the wine's ability to show both immediate appeal and long-term potential, and the way it expresses classic Barossa character without falling into the trap of being overly extracted or heavy-handed.

Reserve designations typically indicate a winery's premium tier, suggesting this wine represents the best fruit selection and most careful winemaking from Auld Family Wines. The personal name 'Ernie' likely honours a family member or significant figure, reflecting the boutique, family-driven nature of the producer. This personal touch, combined with single vineyard sourcing, indicates a wine made with particular care and attention to showcase the very best of what the vineyard can produce.
