Just when we thought the Auld family couldn't get any better, we tried this 97pt beauty. This is what we mean when we say full-throttle Barossa shiraz - bold, honest, and bloody delicious. This is the region doing what it does best, delivering rich, ripe fruit, plenty of oak and zero apologies.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This one bursts with dark cherry and blueberry fruit before melting into layers of cocoa, toasted spice and just a hint of cedar. The palate's thick-set and velvety, with plush tannins holding everything in balance. There's real weight here but it's not clumsy - the structure carries all that power with confidence. Time in French oak (minimum 12 months) has rounded things out beautifully, adding polish to all that Barossa grunt. The oak integrates seamlessly, lending warmth and complexity without overwhelming the fruit or making things feel overdone. Crack it now with a leg of lamb and it'll show all its generous, fruit-forward character, tuck it away for a decade and watch it evolve into something even more complex and seductive as the tannins soften and tertiary characters emerge.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Ernie Reserve showcases the hallmarks of exceptional Barossa Shiraz - concentrated dark fruit, seamless French oak integration, and structured tannins that provide both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential. The minimum 12 months in French oak has added complexity without masking the varietal character, while the wine's balance between power and elegance demonstrates the winemaker's skill in handling premium fruit. This combination of intensity, finesse, and ageing potential is what separates outstanding Barossa Shiraz from merely good examples.

This Reserve Shiraz is beautifully approachable now, showing generous fruit-forward character that pairs wonderfully with rich meats like lamb. However, its structured tannins and concentrated fruit suggest it will reward patience - expect it to evolve magnificently over the next decade as the tannins soften and tertiary flavours of leather, earth, and dried herbs develop. The French oak foundation and full-bodied structure provide the backbone needed for extended cellaring, making it an excellent candidate for both immediate enjoyment and long-term investment.

The wine's rich, velvety texture and dark fruit profile make it ideal for robust, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include slow-cooked lamb, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's tannins cut through rich fats while the fruit complements savoury elements. The cocoa and spice notes also work beautifully with barbecued meats or dishes featuring warm spices like cinnamon and black pepper, while the cedar hints pair naturally with grilled or roasted preparations.

The minimum 12 months in French oak has transformed this Shiraz from a fruit-driven wine into a complex, polished expression. French oak contributes subtle vanilla and spice notes while allowing the dark cherry and blueberry fruit to remain prominent, unlike American oak which can be more assertive. The oak integration is seamless, adding structural support and textural richness without overwhelming the wine's natural Barossa character. This careful oak treatment creates layers of complexity that will continue to evolve and integrate as the wine matures.

As a boutique producer, Auld Family Wines focuses on small-batch, handcrafted wines that showcase specific vineyard sites rather than mass-market appeal. The single vineyard designation indicates fruit sourced from one exceptional block, allowing for precise expression of terroir and vintage conditions. This approach enables greater attention to detail in both vineyard management and winemaking, resulting in wines with distinct personality and sense of place. The 'Reserve' designation further indicates this represents their premium tier, made only in exceptional vintages from their finest fruit.
