Why do we love this wine?

The Barossa Valley is home to quite a few multi-generational wine families. There are legacies as far as the eye can see, stretching across the Barossa plains and rooted as deep as the oldest vineyards. The Aulds are one such family, with the current generation Sam and Jock paying tribute to their lineage who were planting Australian vineyards in the mid 1800's. Each sip tells a story of sun-soaked vineyards, family traditions, and a relentless pursuit of quality. After the first taste of Ernie shiraz you won't be looking back.

"It's superbly expressed on the nose, showing black and blueberry, floral, vanilla, cedar, and warm spice aromas. The concentrated palate exhibits outstanding weight and richness, wonderfully complemented by velvety texture and finely infused tannins, making it delectable and enticing with a sustained, gratifying finish. At its best: 2026 to 2040. 96 Points" - Wine Orbit

Frequently Asked Questions

The Ernie represents single vineyard expression from a boutique family producer, which contrasts with many larger Barossa operations that blend fruit from multiple sites. This focused approach allows the specific terroir characteristics to shine through, creating a more distinctive flavour profile with concentrated black olive, blackcurrant and meaty notes. The Auld family's multi-generational expertise, dating back to the 1850s, brings traditional winemaking wisdom to this modern expression.

The 2023 vintage showcases the wine at its youthful peak, with vibrant fruit expression and structured tannins that define quality Barossa Shiraz. Being a recent release from a boutique producer means you're experiencing the wine exactly as the winemaker intended, with all the primary fruit characteristics intact. The 96-point Wine Orbit rating confirms this vintage's exceptional quality, suggesting optimal growing conditions that year.

Serve at 16-18°C to allow the rich, meaty characteristics to fully express themselves without overwhelming the palate. The wine's robust structure and black olive notes make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly lamb or beef with herb crusts. The blackcurrant flavours also complement aged cheeses and hearty winter stews, while the full body can stand up to bold, spiced cuisines.

Single vineyard designation means all grapes come from one specific site, allowing the unique soil, climate and aspect of that location to be fully expressed in the wine. This approach typically produces more complex, terroir-driven wines compared to regional blends, as the winemaker can showcase the distinctive characteristics of that particular plot. For The Ernie, this means you're tasting the pure expression of one exceptional Barossa vineyard block.

While The Ernie is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant fruit and structured tannins, quality Barossa Shiraz like this typically develops additional complexity over 5-10 years. The wine's full-bodied nature and boutique production suggest it has the structure for medium-term cellaring, where the meaty characteristics will integrate further with the fruit. However, given its current 96-point rating, there's no need to wait if you want to experience its youthful exuberance.
