Juicy and fragrant, but powerfully integrated with a spicy, smoky oak profile. When I first tried this shiraz, it was love at first sight (or, sip).

Why do we love this wine?

The 'JGS' is named after Johann Gottlob Schrapel, who arrived to the Barossa in 1844 by Ox cart and established Barossa's first settlement in Bethany. This wine is an ode to that history, and the first vineyards Johann planted in 1852. Today, the Schrapel family continue to own and operate Bethany Wines, with an impeccable eye for quality and storytelling. This shiraz outperforms most by a mile- a testament to the history of this family and their understanding of true Barossa character. That's what you call a standout, Mofo.

Frequently Asked Questions

The JGS Shiraz represents six generations of winemaking heritage, with vines tracing back to Johann Gottlob Schrapel's original 1852 plantings. This deep historical connection to Barossa's founding allows the Schrapel family to craft wines with an authentic understanding of the terroir that many newer producers simply cannot match. The 95-point rating from Wine Showcase confirms this wine punches well above its weight class.

The 2022 vintage in Barossa was marked by excellent growing conditions that allowed Shiraz to develop intense concentration while maintaining balance. This vintage showcases the chocolate, mulberry, and plum flavors beautifully, creating a full-bodied wine that's both powerful and elegant. The cooler nights during ripening helped preserve the natural acidity that gives this wine its impressive aging potential.

The rich, chocolate-laden profile and full body make this Shiraz perfect for hearty dishes like braised lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, or aged hard cheeses. The mulberry and plum notes complement game meats beautifully, while the wine's structure can stand up to bold spices and barbecue sauces. For vegetarians, try it with mushroom-based dishes or dark chocolate desserts to echo the wine's natural cocoa notes.

Premium Barossa Shiraz from established producers like Bethany typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2022 has excellent cellaring potential until 2030-2037. The full-bodied structure and quality fruit concentration suggest it will develop complex tertiary flavors of leather, tobacco, and earth over time. However, it's also drinking beautifully now if you prefer the vibrant primary fruit characteristics.

Bethany Wines holds the distinction of being established by Barossa's very first settler, making them one of Australia's oldest continuous family wine operations. Their six-generation commitment to the same land and traditional winemaking methods has earned them iconic status among Australian wine collectors. This heritage, combined with their consistent quality and deep understanding of Barossa terroir, places them among the valley's most respected producers alongside names like Penfolds and Henschke.
