2005. The vintage that Burgundy lovers refer to as generational. The kind of year that only comes around once or twice in a lifetime of drinking great wine. Échezeaux Grand Cru needs no introduction if you know Burgundy. And if you don't - well, you're about to get one you won't forget.

Why do we love this wine?

Twenty years of age and this wine is still coiling with energy. Sourced from the elevated En Orveaux section of the cru, it's concentrated, mineral and deeply complex - ripe red cherry, white pepper, chalk dust and a musky, tobacco-laced depth that only time in bottle can produce. The tannins are abundant but refined, the texture is rich and sappy, and the finish has the kind of length that makes you lose track of the conversation entirely. This is not a casual Tuesday night bottle. This is the one you open when the moment genuinely calls for something extraordinary. Grand Cru Burgundy from what many consider the finest vintage of the modern era.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2005 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest in modern Burgundian history, delivering wines with exceptional balance between power and elegance. This particular year benefited from ideal weather conditions that allowed for perfect ripening while maintaining the natural acidity that gives Burgundy its legendary ageing potential. The combination of concentration and finesse achieved in 2005 has created wines that continue to evolve beautifully after two decades, as evidenced by this Echezeaux's continued energy and complexity.

Echezeaux is one of Burgundy's most revered Grand Cru appellations, covering 37 hectares of prime vineyard land adjacent to the legendary Clos de Vougeot. The En Orveaux section, where these grapes were sourced, sits at higher elevation and benefits from exceptional drainage and mineral-rich soils that impart the characteristic chalk dust notes found in this wine. This terroir produces Pinot Noir with remarkable depth and complexity, combining power with the refined elegance that defines great Burgundy.

This mature Grand Cru should be decanted 1-2 hours before serving to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves after twenty years of bottle development. Serve at 16-18°C in large Burgundy glasses that can capture the wine's evolved bouquet of red cherry, white pepper, and tobacco notes. The wine's refined tannins and rich texture make it perfect for pairing with game birds, aged cheeses, or dishes featuring earthy mushrooms that complement its mineral complexity.

These tertiary aromatics are hallmarks of a beautifully aged Pinot Noir that has developed the complex secondary characteristics that only emerge through extended bottle maturation. The tobacco and musky notes indicate the wine has successfully transitioned from its youthful fruit-driven phase into a more sophisticated expression where earth, spice, and mineral elements have integrated harmoniously. This evolution is particularly prized in Burgundy, where the interplay between fruit, terroir, and time creates wines of extraordinary depth and nuance.

While this 2005 Echezeaux is drinking beautifully now at twenty years of age, Grand Cru Burgundies from exceptional vintages can continue evolving for decades when properly stored. The wine's abundant yet refined tannins and underlying mineral structure suggest it has the backbone to develop further complexity over the next 10-15 years. However, given its current peak drinking window and the risk that accompanies extended ageing of older wines, it's best enjoyed within the next 5-8 years to capture its optimal balance of power and elegance.
