There’s something unmistakably Coonawarra about this Cabernet (and it's not just the name 'Brand' stamped all over the label – red earth, a cool lift of mint, and that plush core of blackcurrant fruit. It’s a wine with both boots-on-the-ground authenticity and its own form of gutsy finesse. Red earth caked under fingernails. Akubra tilted just right. This is the real deal.

Why do we love this wine?

From Coonawarra's 'mid-west' comes a cabernet with down-to-earth character that slowly but surely ruins all other Coonawarra cabs. Weighty but vibrant, brimming with cherry, blackcurrant, after-dinner mint and that unmistakable chocolate ripple biscuit richness. Ripe berry fruit lifted by juicy acidity, framed in fine tannins that tighten beautifully at the finish. Cool, lingering freshness woven with blackcurrant pastille and powdered chocolate - this is textbook contemporary Coonawarra.
Plush, powerful, persistent. Dense blackberry pastilles and mulberry with tobacco, mocha, fennel and clove complexity. Dusty tannins coat the palate from coast to coast, while judicious oak hints at where bottle age will take this beauty - give it a good decant and you'll be well-rewarded... leave it a few years and you'll be in heaven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with distinctive eucalyptus and mint characters alongside rich blackcurrant fruit. This Yates Vineyard expression showcases the region's 'mid-west' terroir, delivering that unmistakable chocolate ripple biscuit richness that Coonawarra is renowned for. The cool climate ensures excellent acidity retention, creating wines with both power and elegance that age beautifully over decades.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with proper decanting, its dense tannin structure and judicious oak treatment suggest excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years. The dusty tannins will gradually soften and integrate, allowing the complex tobacco, mocha, and spice notes to emerge more prominently. Peak drinking will likely occur between 2028-2035, when the fruit concentration balances perfectly with developed tertiary flavours.

The wine's rich blackcurrant and cedar profile makes it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly aged beef steaks or lamb with rosemary. The tobacco and mocha complexity also complements game meats like venison or duck, while the fine tannin structure can handle rich, aged cheeses. The wine's mint and spice notes create beautiful synergy with Mediterranean herbs and pepper-crusted preparations.

The 97-point Vinomasters rating and Gold Medal recognition reflect the wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse - a hallmark of premium Coonawarra Cabernet. Critics have praised its textbook expression of contemporary Coonawarra style, where traditional regional character meets modern winemaking precision. The single vineyard sourcing from Yates Vineyard allows for focused terroir expression, creating the complexity and persistence that judges seek in top-tier Australian Cabernet.

Absolutely - decanting is highly recommended for this wine, especially given its youth and dense tannin structure. A good 1-2 hour decant will help soften the dusty tannins and allow the complex aromatics of blackcurrant pastille, powdered chocolate, and fennel to fully express themselves. The wine's weighty character benefits from aeration, which enhances the interplay between its vibrant acidity and rich fruit concentration, delivering the full sensory experience this premium Cabernet offers.
