There’s something unmistakably Coonawarra about this Cabernet (and it's not just the name 'Brand' stamped all over the label – red earth, a cool lift of mint, and that plush core of blackcurrant fruit. It’s a wine with both boots-on-the-ground authenticity and its own form of gutsy finesse. Red earth caked under fingernails. Akubra tilted just right. This is the real deal.

Why do we love this wine?

From Coonawarra's 'mid-west' comes a cabernet with down-to-earth character that slowly but surely ruins all other Coonawarra cabs. Weighty but vibrant, brimming with cherry, blackcurrant, after-dinner mint and that unmistakable chocolate ripple biscuit richness. Ripe berry fruit lifted by juicy acidity, framed in fine tannins that tighten beautifully at the finish. Cool, lingering freshness woven with blackcurrant pastille and powdered chocolate - this is textbook contemporary Coonawarra.
Plush, powerful, persistent. Dense blackberry pastilles and mulberry with tobacco, mocha, fennel and clove complexity. Dusty tannins coat the palate from coast to coast, while judicious oak hints at where bottle age will take this beauty - give it a good decant and you'll be well-rewarded... leave it a few years and you'll be in heaven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with exceptional structure and longevity. This Yates Vineyard bottling showcases the region's signature blackcurrant intensity and fine tannin structure, enhanced by the cooling maritime influence that preserves natural acidity. The 'mid-west' location within Coonawarra offers a unique microclimate that balances power with elegance.

While delicious now with proper decanting, this wine is built for extended cellaring thanks to its full-bodied structure and fine tannin framework. The high-quality ratings and single vineyard pedigree suggest it will develop beautifully over 8-12 years, with the dusty tannins softening and the chocolate and tobacco notes becoming more pronounced. Peak drinking will likely occur between 2028-2035.

The wine's full-bodied nature and rich blackcurrant flavours make it perfect for red meat dishes, particularly grilled lamb with rosemary or aged beef steaks. The chocolate and mocha notes complement hard cheeses like aged cheddar, while the fennel and clove complexity pairs beautifully with Mediterranean herb-crusted dishes. The wine's structure can handle rich, sauce-based preparations without being overwhelmed.

Young, full-bodied Cabernets like this 2023 benefit enormously from decanting to allow the tight tannin structure to soften and the complex aromatics to fully express themselves. The dense blackberry and mulberry fruit needs oxygen to reveal the subtle tobacco, mocha, and spice layers beneath. Decanting for 1-2 hours will unlock the wine's true potential and showcase why it earned such impressive critical scores.

Scores of 97 and 96 points from respected critics, plus a Gold Medal at the Melbourne International Wine Show, indicate exceptional winemaking and vineyard management. These ratings place it among Australia's finest Cabernets, reflecting the wine's perfect balance of power and finesse. The Five Star Halliday rating for the winery confirms Brand & Sons' consistent quality, making this single vineyard expression a standout even within their premium range.
