We've previously sold the Langhe nebbiolo from this fantastic Piemontese producer and now we present their Barolo - oh yeah! This is the good stuff. It is a joy to be working with their top wine, an example of perfectly made and developed Barolo from the most esteemed region in Italy. Chuck your seatbelt on, this one's a wild ride.

Why do we love this wine?

This gorgeous Barolo comes from 30-40 year old vines in the sub regions of Coste di Rose and Monrobiolo di Bussia. The vineyards are managed with minimal input and the winemaking is quite modern. Expect all of the hallmarks of quality nebbiolo - the classic tar-and-roses nose with layers of dry herbs. Structurally it's Barolo through and through, with a tannin structure that will carry the wine for years and driving acid interlaced with fruit and savoury notes. Drink now, with a decent decant, or cellar for 15+ years - up to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

While all Barolo is made from Nebbiolo, this wine showcases the grape's full potential through its specific terroir from Coste di Rose and Monrobiolo di Bussia sub-regions. The 30-40 year old vines contribute concentrated flavours and complexity that younger plantings simply cannot achieve. Unlike lighter Nebbiolo expressions from other regions, this Barolo displays the variety's most structured form with powerful tannins and exceptional ageing potential of 15+ years.

The classic 'tar-and-roses' profile is Nebbiolo's signature calling card, created by unique aromatic compounds that develop as the grape ripens in Piedmont's specific climate. The tarry notes come from phenolic compounds that intensify with vine age, while the floral rose petal character emerges from terpenes concentrated in the grape skins. This aromatic complexity is what separates great Barolo from simpler red wines and becomes even more pronounced with proper decanting.

This 2020 Barolo offers flexibility - it's approachable now with proper decanting (2-3 hours) to soften the robust tannin structure, but will reward patience with cellaring. Young Barolo often shows primary fruit and floral notes, while aged examples develop tertiary flavours like leather, truffle, and dried herbs. The wine's driving acidity and substantial tannin backbone suggest it will continue evolving beautifully for 15+ years, becoming more complex and integrated over time.

This wine's savoury, textured profile and high tannin content make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can stand up to its intensity. Classic pairings include braised beef, aged hard cheeses, and truffle-based dishes that complement the wine's earthy undertones. The sour cherry notes also work beautifully with game meats like venison or duck, while the wine's acidity cuts through fatty dishes like osso buco or slow-cooked lamb shanks.

Minimal input viticulture focuses on allowing the vineyard's natural ecosystem to thrive with reduced chemical intervention, often resulting in more authentic terroir expression. This approach typically involves organic or biodynamic practices, lower yields, and greater vine stress, which concentrates flavours in the grapes. For this Barolo, minimal input management likely contributes to the wine's complexity and sense of place, allowing the unique characteristics of the Coste di Rose and Monrobiolo di Bussia sites to shine through.
