First crafted in 2013, this classic Bordeaux-inspired blend showcases the harmony that comes from skilful blending, perfected over many years. A medium-to-full-bodied red that’s beautifully balanced, refined yet generous. Raspberry, cherry, plum and blackcurrant weave together with notes of coffee, chocolate, roasted nuts and warm spice. The tannins are polished and integrated, giving the palate structure and length while keeping the wine approachable.

Why do we love this wine?

Four varieties unite here in perfect balance, each bringing its own character to the glass: merlot delivers plush, fruit-driven charm, cabernet sauvignon contributes backbone and silky tannins, cabernet franc lifts the aromatics with focus and finesse, while petit verdot adds spice, depth and a flash of blueberry fruit. Each parcel was open fermented, spending 7–10 days on skins before pressing. The cabernet parcels matured in seasoned French and American oak, while merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot saw time in French oak to enhance texture and integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

This four-variety blend showcases the art of assemblage, where each grape contributes distinct characteristics that create complexity impossible in single varietals. The merlot provides immediate fruit appeal and softness, cabernet sauvignon delivers structure and aging potential, cabernet franc adds aromatic lift and elegance, while petit verdot contributes colour intensity and exotic spice notes. McLaren Vale's warm Mediterranean climate allows all four varieties to ripen fully, creating seamless integration.

The strategic use of both French and American oak creates textural complexity while respecting each variety's character. French oak imparts subtle vanilla and spice notes while enhancing the wine's natural fruit expression, particularly benefiting the merlot and cabernet franc components. The seasoned oak approach means the wood influence is integrated rather than dominant, allowing the McLaren Vale terroir and varietal characteristics to shine through with added depth and structure.

This wine's rich tannin structure and spice complexity make it ideal for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or rich pasta dishes with mushroom and herb sauces. The blackcurrant and black cherry flavours complement game meats beautifully, while the spice notes from petit verdot enhance dishes with pepper, herbs, or Mediterranean flavours.

While delicious now, this blend's structure suggests excellent aging potential over the next 8-12 years. The cabernet sauvignon backbone provides longevity, while the petit verdot adds colour stability and tannin structure that will soften beautifully with time. McLaren Vale's consistent vintage conditions in 2022, combined with the wine's full-bodied nature and oak integration, indicate it will develop greater complexity and elegance through proper cellaring.

Black Market Deals allow renowned producers to offer premium wines at exceptional prices without affecting their regular retail relationships or brand positioning. The 90-point ratings across all categories - Killer Vintage, Dangerous Value, and Iconic Producer - indicate this comes from a highly respected McLaren Vale winery. This anonymity enables wine lovers to access premium quality at significantly reduced prices while the producer maintains their market strategy.
