This might well be our new benchmark for Coonawarra cabernet. From an absolute Mofo favourite producer, and the ripping 2016 vintage - this is as good as Coonawarra cabernet gets around here.

Why do we love this wine?

A wine that gets the utmost attention at every stage of the winemaking process: the vineyard is hand-pruned, keeping yields low and flavours concentrated. Only hand-selected new French oak is used for ageing. This has been resting in perfect conditions in the winery’s cellar for nearly a decade, so what was, in it’s youth, a massive, nearly explosive wine, to the point of perfect drinking with mind-blowing complexity and length. If you’re after the finest that Coonawarra can achieve, then this is it right here.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine has been cellared in perfect conditions for nearly a decade, transforming from its youthful explosive character into a complex, perfectly mature expression. The 'Museum Release' designation indicates it's reached optimal drinking condition through extended ageing, developing the secondary and tertiary flavours that only time can create. The combination of low-yield vineyard practices and premium French oak has created a wine that showcases Coonawarra's finest potential.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with distinctive eucalyptus and mint characteristics alongside classic blackcurrant flavours. The cool climate allows for slow ripening, developing complex tannin structures and maintaining natural acidity. This region is often called Australia's Bordeaux, and this wine demonstrates why with its cedar, leather, and blackberry profile that's quintessentially Coonawarra.

With scores of 95-96 points from multiple respected critics including Wine Showcase Magazine and Wine Orbit, this wine sits in the 'outstanding' category reserved for exceptional bottles. The Gold Medal recognition and Five Stars rating indicate consistent excellence across different judging panels. These scores, combined with the 4.4 Vivino rating, suggest both critical acclaim and consumer appreciation - a rare combination that validates the wine's exceptional quality.

The rich, full-bodied nature with blackberry, cedar, and leather notes makes this perfect for red meat dishes like aged beef, lamb shanks, or venison. The tannin structure and French oak influence can handle bold flavours like blue cheese, while the wine's complexity complements herb-crusted roasts or dishes with earthy mushrooms. The mature character also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses that match the wine's developed complexity.

After nearly a decade of perfect cellar conditions, this wine has reached its optimal drinking window where the explosive youth has mellowed into 'mind-blowing complexity and length'. While premium Coonawarra Cabernet can age for decades, the description suggests it's at peak maturity now. However, given the quality and structure, it should maintain this excellence for another 5-10 years, allowing you flexibility in when to enjoy this exceptional bottle.
