Ripe, plush, juicy and ready to go - this is a shiraz that brings something for everyone. Vibrant fruit, regional spice and a chocolatey oak back bone puts little wonder in the drinker's mind - this is McLaren Vale shiraz and ripper McV shiraz at that.

Why do we love this wine?

Chalk Hill are a McLaren Vale institution. Boasting a 5 Star Halliday rating and a stable of wines that'd make some of the world's best very jealous. James Halliday described them as “An outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity”, and this wine certainly fits that description. Lifted aromatics of blood plums, red cherries and flowering herbs open up to a full-bodied palate of chocolate, blackcurrant and various red and black fruits. There's a fine tannin and lingering spice on the finish to make this a wine for almost any meal. Yep, you guessed it, this is an extra McLaren Vale-y McLaren Vale shiraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale shiraz is renowned for its rich, full-bodied character with intense fruit concentration, which this Wits End Vineyard bottling exemplifies perfectly. The region's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for shiraz to develop complex flavours ranging from dark fruits to chocolate and spice. This particular wine showcases the classic McLaren Vale profile with its blood plum and blackcurrant notes, combined with the fine tannin structure that makes the region's shiraz so food-friendly and age-worthy.

Single vineyard wines like this Wits End Vineyard Shiraz offer a pure expression of a specific terroir, allowing the unique characteristics of that particular site to shine through. Unlike blended wines from multiple vineyards, single vineyard bottlings capture the distinct soil composition, microclimate, and aspect of one location. This focused approach often results in more complex, nuanced wines with a stronger sense of place, which is why single vineyard designations are highly valued by wine enthusiasts and collectors.

A 5 Star Halliday rating represents the pinnacle of Australian wine excellence, awarded to fewer than 100 wineries nationwide. James Halliday's rating system evaluates wineries based on consistency, quality, and their ability to produce wines of exemplary character year after year. For Chalk Hill to maintain this prestigious rating demonstrates their commitment to exceptional winemaking practices and their position among Australia's elite producers, making any wine from their stable a reliable choice for quality-conscious consumers.

This rich McLaren Vale shiraz is best served at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex chocolate and spice notes to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help soften the fine tannins and open up the lifted aromatics of blood plums and flowering herbs. The wine's full-bodied nature and balanced structure make it an excellent match for hearty dishes like grilled meats, rich pasta sauces, or aged cheeses.

The 2022 vintage is drinking beautifully now, showcasing vibrant fruit flavours and well-integrated tannins that make it immediately approachable. However, given McLaren Vale shiraz's reputation for ageing gracefully and this wine's fine tannin structure, it has excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years. The wine will continue to develop complexity over time, with the chocolate and spice elements becoming more pronounced while the fruit flavours evolve from primary to more tertiary characteristics.
