James Suckling called it "the famous 1959 all over again." That should tell you everything you need to know about what's sitting in this bottle. Château Latour is the most powerful and age-worthy of Bordeaux's First Growths - a wine of almost mythological status, produced from one of the greatest vineyard sites on earth.

Why do we love this wine?

The 2009 is the vintage that even the most seasoned collectors speak about with genuine reverence. A year of extraordinary richness, concentration and natural perfection that produced wines built to outlive everyone in the room. Deep, inky and completely commanding in the glass. Blackcurrant, dark plum, graphite and cedar on the nose, with dark chocolate, tobacco and a mineral intensity that courses through every sip. The tannins are velvety and structured, the fruit concentration is almost overwhelming, and the finish lingers for what feels like minutes rather than seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2009 vintage represents a convergence of perfect weather conditions and Château Latour's centuries-old expertise, resulting in what many consider a once-in-a-generation wine. The year delivered ideal ripening conditions that allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend to achieve extraordinary concentration without losing elegance. When multiple prestigious critics award perfect or near-perfect scores simultaneously, it signals a wine that transcends typical quality benchmarks and enters the realm of liquid history.

While this 2009 Latour is already drinking beautifully at 15 years of age, its structured tannins and exceptional concentration suggest it will continue evolving for another 30-50 years. Pauillac's greatest wines are renowned for their longevity, and this vintage's mineral backbone and velvety tannin structure indicate it's still in its youth. For optimal enjoyment, consider cellaring until 2030-2035, though patient collectors may be rewarded by waiting even longer to witness its full transformation.

Latour's unique terroir in Pauillac, particularly its deep gravel soils and proximity to the Gironde estuary, creates wines with distinctive mineral intensity and structured power that sets it apart from neighbours like Lafite or Mouton. The estate's commitment to traditional winemaking methods, combined with their selective use of only the finest vineyard plots, produces wines with an almost architectural quality. This 2009 exemplifies Latour's signature style - commanding presence, graphite minerality, and the ability to age gracefully for decades while maintaining remarkable freshness.

This full-bodied Latour demands equally substantial cuisine that can match its concentration and complexity. Classic pairings include aged beef wellington, slow-braised lamb shanks, or mature hard cheeses like aged Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano. The wine's graphite and tobacco notes also complement game meats like venison or duck, while its dark fruit concentration pairs beautifully with rich, earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles.

Absolutely decant this 2009 Latour, as proper aeration will unlock its full aromatic complexity and soften its still-youthful tannins. Given the wine's concentration and age, allow 2-3 hours of decanting to fully appreciate its evolution from the initial dark fruit intensity to the emergence of cedar, tobacco, and mineral nuances. The extended finish that characterises this vintage will become even more pronounced with proper breathing time, revealing layers that might otherwise remain hidden in the glass.
