The Onkaparinga shiraz is a benchmark expression from Clarendon Hills - a Grand Cru-classified site in Blewitt Springs that consistently delivers one of the most profound shiraz releases in the country. With vines planted in 1946, rooted in deep sandy soils over ironstone, shale, and quartz, this vineyard has pedigree in spades - in the past even contributing fruit to Penfolds Grange. This is the good stuff.

Why do we love this wine?

This is a wine that captures the very essence of site and season. From the first swirl, it booms out of the glass with an enveloping scent of blue and purple florals, crème de violette, and pristine dark fruit. Boysenberry, blueberry, blackberry pastille, and wild raspberry weave together with layers of clove, pepper, and warm spice. The palate is all about texture - silken, flowing, yet firmly structured. Superfine tannins glide across the tongue, carrying waves of fruit and spice into a finish that lingers with both power and grace. Soulful, elegant, and effortlessly generous, this is a shiraz that rivals the world’s very best.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Onkaparinga Shiraz represents the pinnacle of McLaren Vale winemaking, earning exceptional scores of 97 points from Halliday and 96 from James Suckling. The wine showcases the unique terroir of the Onkaparinga vineyard through its distinctive floral aromatics - particularly the crème de violette character that's a hallmark of premium McLaren Vale Shiraz. Its silken texture combined with firm structure demonstrates the masterful balance that Clarendon Hills achieves between power and elegance.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to fully appreciate its complex aromatics and silken texture. The wine's rich fruit profile and warm spice notes make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts. The superfine tannins and flowing palate also complement aged cheeses and hearty stews. Consider decanting for 30-60 minutes to allow the layers of boysenberry, blueberry, and spice to fully express themselves.

With its firm structure and superfine tannins, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 15-20 years. The 2023 vintage benefits from McLaren Vale's exceptional growing conditions, creating wines with both immediate appeal and long-term development prospects. As it ages, expect the vibrant fruit flavours to integrate further with the spice elements, while the wine's inherent elegance will become even more pronounced. The high critic scores suggest this vintage will reward patient cellaring.

Crème de violette refers to the distinctive violet-like aromatics naturally found in premium Shiraz, not an added ingredient. This floral character develops from specific compounds called terpenes that form during fermentation and ageing, particularly in cool-climate or high-altitude vineyards. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils are renowned for producing Shiraz with these elegant floral notes. The presence of such refined aromatics alongside the wine's power indicates exceptional fruit quality and careful winemaking.

This phrase reflects the concept of terroir - how the specific vineyard location, soil, climate, and vintage conditions are expressed in the wine's character. The 2023 season in McLaren Vale provided ideal conditions for Shiraz, allowing the Onkaparinga vineyard's unique characteristics to shine through. You can taste this in the wine's pristine dark fruit quality, the balance between power and grace, and the way the tannins carry both fruit and spice seamlessly. It's a wine that truly speaks of its place and time.
