Clarendon Hills aren't just another winery. They are, without a doubt, one of the most important producers to ever turn their hand to the nectar of the gods - this is the best grenache that they make. The quality and intensity of this wine is something to behold - and it'll stay that way for 20+ years (conservative estimate).

Why do we love this wine?
Nestled on a steep, eastern-facing hillside in Blewitt Springs, the Romas vineyard is home to pre-phylloxera grenache vines planted around 1920. These gnarly, low-yielding vines receive the royal treatment in he vineyard and the fruit's feet never touch the floor from vine to bottle (in a metaphorical sense). The result is Romas Old Vine Grenache - a mineral-driven, profoundly structured expression of McLaren Vale grenache at its finest. Expect a kaleidoscope of aromas and flavours: Musk, blood orange, raspberry, kirsch, and violet, lifted by flinty, graphite, and ironstone undertones. Silky, talcum-like tannins and medium weight make the wine approachable now, yet capable of evolving gracefully for 20 years or more. Exotic, vivid, and utterly captivating, this is a grenache for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Halliday Wine Companion
Roman Bratasiuk championed Grenache before many but, with the newer revolution televised, the Clarendon Hills wines are seeing a second wave of influence. Fragrant and fine? No. The house stamp is there (so, please decant) but with less brood, more detail. This is from the Blewitt Springs vineyard, planted mainly in the '40s, and is the most finessed of the ’23 grenache bottlings. It's savoury in its delivery, with tart but concentrated dark red fruits, scented with souk spices, damask rose and licorice root. There’s a sinewiness to this, a compact between tannin and acid that puckers and draws flavours long. A lot’s going on here, and this will live for a long time.
