This is Marananga grenache exactly how we like it, loud and proud. Old bush vines planted in sandy soils, and picked by hand when the fruit was absolutely peaking. No rushing, no overcooking - just pure, ripe, vibrant flavour straight out of one of Barossa’s best grenache pockets.

Why do we love this wine?

The winemaking keeps it hands-on and honest. Small batches, open ferments, plenty of old-school plunging, then a gentle rest in seasoned French oak so the fruit stays front and centre. No over-oaked nonsense here - this is all about letting the site do the speaking. It’s silky, precise and beautifully balanced. Fine red fruits and pomegranate brightness glide through, with a savoury, mineral edge that screams Marananga. The tannins are smooth and shapely, carrying everything long and clean without weighing it down. Fresh, elegant, quietly powerful - this is grenache with charm, confidence and serious drink-me-now appeal.

Brilliant crimson in colour, this Grenache opens with lifted aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, supported by notes of dried herbs and gentle spice. The palate is soft and rounded, with fine acidity bringing freshness and balance to the generous fruit core. There's an understated rustic charm here; a nod to classic French winemaking, where texture and purity take centre stage. The wine glides gracefully, revealing supple tannins and savoury undertones that build complexity with air. As it evolves in the glass, new layers unfold, a wine that changes shape and mood, just like the sands of Marananga. Score: 96 points (Outstanding: classic regional style with depth and longevity) Drink now to 2029

Frequently Asked Questions

Marananga sits in the heart of the Barossa Valley with distinctive sandy soils that provide excellent drainage and stress the vines just enough to concentrate flavours. The warm continental climate allows grenache to ripen slowly and evenly, developing the variety's signature silky texture and mineral complexity. This terroir produces grenache with a unique savoury edge that distinguishes it from the more fruit-forward styles found in other regions.

Seasoned French oak has already given up most of its strong vanilla and spice compounds, allowing the grenache's delicate fruit character to remain the star. New oak would overpower grenache's naturally elegant profile, masking the pomegranate brightness and mineral qualities that make this variety so appealing. The aged barrels provide gentle structure and subtle integration without the heavy-handed oak flavours that can dominate lighter red wines.

The 2024 vintage earned 'Killer Vintage' recognition, indicating exceptional growing conditions that produced wines with outstanding balance and concentration. Cool nights and warm days during ripening allowed the grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining natural acidity. This vintage showcases grenache at its most refined, with the perfect marriage of fruit purity and structural elegance that defines great Barossa reds.

The wine's medium body and silky tannins make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Mediterranean-inspired dishes that echo grenache's origins. Try it with herb-crusted lamb, duck confit, or mushroom risotto where the wine's savoury mineral edge complements earthy flavours. The bright red fruit character also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, aged cheeses, or even spiced Middle Eastern cuisine.

This grenache is crafted for immediate enjoyment, with its 'serious drink-me-now appeal' highlighting the winemaker's intention to create a wine that's perfectly balanced upon release. While quality grenache can age gracefully for 5-8 years, this style emphasises fresh fruit character and elegant structure that's at its peak now. The smooth tannins and bright acidity suggest it will drink beautifully over the next 3-4 years without significant improvement from cellaring.
