This is McLaren Vale shiraz from the absolute best in the business - we mean that. A potent elixir of vibrant red cherries and blue plums. A swirl of raspberry and liquorice. Dusky, earthy savouriness and piney cedar wood chime in late and usher the fruit along.

Why do we love this wine?

A tried and true Mofo favourite. We love this wine for many reasons, but most of all it's the way it jumps out of the glass. Its one of those wines you're reluctant to drink because there is so much joy to be had in just smelling it. On the palate herbaceous blackcurrant leaf and herbal tea flank what is a powerful fruit core. Dark berry compote and quince dominate. Fresh and bright acidity (aided, in part, by the splash of roussanne that's added to the ferment) gather and drive the fruit density through a long, lasting finish. As far as the Wild Pixie is concerned, this is the best incarnation yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Wild Pixie's extraordinary aromatics come from d'Arenberg's unique winemaking approach, including the addition of a splash of Roussanne during fermentation. This white grape variety contributes floral and herbal complexity that lifts the wine's bouquet beyond typical Shiraz profiles. The McLaren Vale terroir also plays a crucial role, as the region's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create wines with exceptional aromatic intensity and complexity.

Adding Roussanne to Shiraz is a traditional Rhône Valley technique that d'Arenberg has masterfully adapted to McLaren Vale. The small percentage of this white grape enhances the wine's natural acidity, creating better balance and a more vibrant mouthfeel. This co-fermentation also adds subtle floral and herbal notes that complement Shiraz's dark fruit character, resulting in a more complex and food-friendly wine with improved ageing potential.

McLaren Vale's unique combination of ancient soils, rolling hills, and Mediterranean climate creates ideal conditions for producing rich, full-bodied Shiraz with distinctive character. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening periods that develop complex flavours while maintaining natural acidity. This terroir contributes to the Wild Pixie's powerful fruit core and herbaceous complexity, making it distinctly different from Shiraz produced in other Australian regions.

The Wild Pixie's rich fruit density and herbal complexity make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or Mediterranean-style braised meats. The wine's bright acidity and spice notes also complement game meats, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses. The herbaceous blackcurrant leaf character pairs beautifully with dishes featuring fresh herbs, while the wine's structure can stand up to bold flavours and rich sauces.

The 2019 Wild Pixie is drinking beautifully now but has excellent cellaring potential due to its full-bodied structure, balanced acidity, and quality tannins. McLaren Vale Shiraz typically develops additional complexity over 8-12 years, with the Roussanne addition helping maintain freshness throughout this period. The wine's powerful fruit core and natural acidity suggest it will continue evolving gracefully, developing more savoury and earthy characteristics while retaining its vibrant fruit expression.
