We are big fans of Domaine Anita here at Mofo HQ. Winemaker Anita Neveu crafts immaculately precise single vineyard wines that show off some of the most spectacular parts of Beaujolais. This stunning drop is from one of our favourite areas... Chénas! It might be the smallest of the Beaujolais Crus, but this one’s packing a bit of punch and is absolutely dripping with character.

Why do we love this wine?

At first sip, it’s all about that fresh, juicy red fruit, medium-bodied and effortlessly charming. But then it starts to flex — the fine tannins build steadily, drawing out notes of licorice and earthy spice that take things to another level. Made entirely with whole bunches from a northeast-facing parcel, this is a wine of both energy and precision, with a finish that lingers long and clean. It’s approachable now for its brightness and fruit, but will reward a bit of patience if you’re inclined to cellar Drink now or tuck way for a couple of years - either way, this is Chénas showing why it deserves a place in the spotlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chénas is one of the smallest and most underrated Beaujolais crus, sitting between Moulin-à-Vent and Juliénas on granite and schist soils. This terroir produces wines with more structure and mineral complexity than typical Beaujolais, which you can taste in this wine's slate notes and fine tannin build. The northeast-facing vineyard aspect helps retain freshness while developing the earthy spice characteristics that distinguish Chénas from its fruitier neighbours.

Whole bunch fermentation with Gamay creates a unique textural profile by including stems during fermentation, which adds structure and spice without overwhelming the fruit. This technique enhances the wine's natural freshness and creates those distinctive licorice and earthy spice notes you'll find in this bottle. It's a traditional Burgundian approach that's gaining popularity in Beaujolais for producers seeking more complexity and age-worthy wines.

While delicious now for its bright red fruit and energy, this wine will develop beautifully over 3-5 years in proper storage. The fine tannin structure and mineral backbone suggest it has the framework for medium-term ageing, where the primary fruit will integrate with tertiary flavours of earth and spice. Store it in a cool, dark place around 12-15°C, and you'll be rewarded with increased complexity and a more seamless palate.

This medium-bodied Gamay bridges the gap between light bistro wines and more serious reds, making it incredibly food-friendly. The fresh acidity and moderate tannins pair beautifully with roasted chicken, duck breast, or mushroom-based dishes that echo the wine's earthy spice notes. The slate minerality also complements charcuterie and aged cheeses, while the bright fruit makes it excellent with tomato-based pasta dishes.

The 93-point James Suckling score and 'Killer Vintage' designation reflect both the exceptional 2023 vintage conditions in Beaujolais and this producer's skill in capturing the terroir. These ratings suggest this wine punches well above its weight class, offering Burgundy-like complexity at a Beaujolais price point. Such recognition from respected critics indicates this is a wine that showcases why serious wine lovers are rediscovering the potential of well-made Beaujolais crus.
