Why do we love this wine?

The vineyard sits on limestone-rich slopes in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, where the elevation and drainage produce pinot noir of genuine elegance and minerality. Every grape hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and treated with the kind of respect that only people who genuinely love what they do can manage. In the glass it's everything good Burgundy should be - fragrant wild red and dark fruit, a mineral backbone that gives it real tension and focus, and a silky, finely structured palate that finishes clean and long. This isn't a wine that shouts. It doesn't need to, it just lets you figure out that it is, in fact, a very, very, very good wine. Charcuterie, soft cheese, roast chicken or a quiet evening with something worth thinking about. All excellent companions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hautes-Côtes de Beaune sits at higher elevations than the famous Côte d'Or villages, creating cooler growing conditions that extend the ripening season and preserve natural acidity. The limestone-rich slopes provide excellent drainage while imparting the mineral backbone that defines quality Burgundy. This appellation offers exceptional value, producing wines with the elegance and terroir expression of Burgundy at more accessible prices than the grand cru villages below.

The 2024 vintage in Burgundy benefited from ideal growing conditions with a balanced combination of warmth and rainfall that allowed for slow, even ripening. This created wines with excellent concentration while maintaining the natural acidity and elegance that Pinot Noir demands. Early releases like this Domaine Marillier show the vintage's potential for producing wines with both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential.

Serve this Pinot Noir slightly below room temperature at 14-16°C to highlight its delicate aromatics and silky texture. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the wild berry and earthy notes, while using Burgundy glasses will concentrate the fragrant bouquet. The wine's mineral backbone and medium body make it versatile with food, particularly excellent with roast chicken, charcuterie, or aged soft cheeses that complement its earthy complexity.

Hand-harvesting allows pickers to select only perfectly ripe grapes while leaving damaged or underripe fruit on the vine, crucial for Pinot Noir's delicate skin structure. Careful sorting removes any remaining imperfect grapes, stems, or debris before fermentation begins. This meticulous approach, typical of quality Burgundy producers like Domaine Marillier, ensures only the best fruit contributes to the wine's elegant, focused character and clean finish.

This 2024 Burgundy is drinking beautifully now but has the structure to develop for 8-12 years in proper cellar conditions. The wine's mineral backbone and balanced acidity will allow it to gain complexity over the next 3-5 years, developing secondary earthy and mushroom notes. Store it on its side in a cool, dark place at 12-14°C, and it will reward patience with increased depth and integration of its elegant fruit and terroir characteristics.
