What happens when you source fruit from two different terroirs with two different characters? A wine that's somehow rich, fine, generous and yet spritely. With plenty to write home about, this 2022 'DD' is a drop that knocks your socks off from the very first sip. Fantastic stuff.

Why do we love this wine?

This 2022 'DD' shiraz performs way above its paygrade. A clever concoction born from blending fruits from two vastly different vineyards (one perched on cool slopes and the other on sandy soils) it manages to be rich, flavoursome and oh so generous. A lengthy 20-month stint in 90% French oak and 10% new American oak have unearthed notes of chocolate, spices, coffee, liquorice and blackberries that result in impressive length and luscious texture. At its best now and for the next decade. Bottoms up!

Frequently Asked Questions

The secret lies in Dowie Doole's clever blending strategy, combining fruit from two contrasting vineyard sites - one on cool slopes and another on sandy soils. This dual-terroir approach creates complexity typically found in more expensive wines, while the 20-month maturation in predominantly French oak (90%) with a touch of American oak (10%) adds layers of chocolate, spice, and coffee notes that elevate the wine's sophistication.

This wine is drinking beautifully now but has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next decade until 2032. The combination of McLaren Vale's robust Shiraz character, extended oak maturation, and the wine's impressive length suggests it will develop more complex secondary flavours - think leather, tobacco, and earthy notes - while maintaining its core fruit integrity.

The 90% French oak provides elegant tannin structure and subtle spice integration, while the 10% American oak contributes those distinctive vanilla and coconut notes that complement Shiraz's natural chocolate and coffee characteristics. This ratio allows the McLaren Vale fruit to shine while adding complexity, and the 20-month maturation period ensures the oak is fully integrated rather than overpowering.

Despite being described as 'rich and full-bodied' in style, its medium-bodied palate weight makes it versatile with food. The chocolate and spice notes pair beautifully with barbecued meats, especially lamb with rosemary, while the liquorice and blackberry flavours complement game dishes and aged cheeses. The wine's generous texture also works well with hearty pasta dishes featuring mushrooms or rich tomato-based sauces.

Receiving 90 points from four different wine competitions (Gold Wine Showcase, Five Star Wine Orbit, Killer Vintage, and Boutique Producer) demonstrates remarkable consistency in quality assessment. This consensus suggests the wine successfully balances power with elegance, delivers excellent value, and showcases McLaren Vale's terroir authentically - qualities that professional judges consistently recognise and reward.
