"This is why red wine is cellared" - Campbell Mattinson. Let's not beat around the bush, this is a big shiraz, even by McLaren Vale's standards. Years of careful cellaring has brought a smoothness and silkiness to this wine, whilst not stifling the natural grunt and gutsiness of this gorgeous drop. Aged shiraz, done very, very, very well.

Why do we love this wine?

A few years on and absolutely strutting its stuff. As Mattinson noted, this is exactly why we cellar red wine. It’s all come together beautifully - rich notes of coffee, blackberry, leather and earthiness meet sweet spice, hints of liquorice, and a long list of other subtleties. The palate’s smooth, layered and complete, framed by fine, resolved tannins that still hold the structure beautifully. All the promise it showed in its youth? Fully delivered. This is a mature stunner, right in the sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine perfectly demonstrates why cellaring red wine is so rewarding. After several years of bottle ageing, the initially bold fruit has integrated beautifully with secondary flavours like coffee, leather, and earthiness. The tannins have softened and resolved, creating a smooth, layered palate that showcases the full potential that was only hinted at in its youth.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing rich, full-bodied Shiraz with excellent ageing potential. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes help develop the complex flavour profile seen here, while the varied geology contributes to the wine's earthy undertones and structured tannins that allow for graceful maturation.

The wine's rich coffee and blackberry notes, combined with leather and earthy characteristics, make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The liquorice hints and sweet spice also pair beautifully with slow-cooked dishes featuring herbs like thyme and oregano, or even dark chocolate desserts.

This wine is currently in its sweet spot, offering immediate drinking pleasure with its beautifully integrated flavours and resolved tannins. While it could continue to develop for several more years, the description suggests it has reached optimal maturity where all elements are harmoniously balanced, making now an excellent time to enjoy its full potential.

The consistent 95-point scores from both Campbell Mattinson and Wine Pilot, plus strong Vivino ratings, indicate exceptional quality and broad appeal among wine professionals and consumers alike. Such unanimous high praise suggests this wine successfully balances power with elegance, delivering both immediate appeal and the complexity that critics value in premium Australian Shiraz.
