The exceptional quality likely stems from ideal growing conditions in McLaren Vale that year, allowing the Shiraz grapes to develop intense aromatics and concentrated fruit flavours. The addition of a splash of roussanne during fermentation also contributes fresh acidity that perfectly balances the wine's power, creating a more harmonious and age-worthy expression than previous vintages.

The small addition of roussanne (a white grape variety) to the Shiraz ferment is a traditional winemaking technique used to enhance freshness and acidity. This practice, known as co-fermentation, is legal under Australian wine laws as long as the primary variety comprises at least 85% of the blend. The roussanne doesn't change the wine's character dramatically but adds a bright, mineral edge that lifts the dense fruit and prevents the full-bodied style from becoming too heavy or cloying.
