We are big fans of Domaine Anita here at Mofo HQ. Winemaker Anita Neveu crafts immaculately precise single vineyard wines that show off some of the most spectacular parts of Beaujolais. From 80 year old vines just near Mâcon, this one's all about pristine fruit and those famous granite soils from which it was born.

Why do we love this wine?

This is the kind of wine that stops you mid-sip. Sourced from revered old vines, it carries serious depth, but what really makes it remarkable is the restraint and finesse with which that power is delivered. Silky, slick and precise, its personality is gentle and polite, rather than booming. The nose is lifted with delicate spice and aromas of red roses, while the medium-bodied palate holds a fine-grained texture, almost as if you can taste the granite soils themselves. A good proportion of whole-cluster fermentation adds aromatic lift, while maturation in two-thirds concrete tank and one-third seasoned Burgundian barrels preserves purity and minerality. The finish is emphatically dry, dramatic in its mineral freshness, and altogether compelling. Awarded 96 points by James Suckling, this is a wine that'll reward patience but is more than ready for some immediate enjoyment. Drink now, or watch it evolve beautifully over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

While many Beaujolais wines are light and fruity, this Moulin-à-Vent represents the most structured and age-worthy cru of the region. The 'Très Vieille Vigne' designation indicates it's sourced from very old Gamay vines, which naturally produce lower yields and more concentrated fruit. The granite soils of Moulin-à-Vent, combined with these ancient vines, create wines with remarkable depth and mineral complexity that can rival fine Burgundy. This particular bottling showcases the serious, elegant side of Gamay that many wine lovers never experience.

Whole-cluster fermentation involves fermenting grapes with their stems intact, a technique that adds aromatic complexity and structural finesse to the wine. In this case, it contributes to the wine's lifted nose with delicate spice notes and enhances the silky texture on the palate. This method is particularly effective with old-vine Gamay, as the mature vines produce stems that are fully lignified and contribute tannins without harsh green flavours. The technique helps create the wine's signature restraint and polished character.

The two-thirds concrete tank and one-third seasoned Burgundian barrel maturation is a carefully calculated approach to preserve the wine's purity while adding subtle complexity. Concrete allows the wine to breathe gently without imparting flavours, maintaining the granite minerality and fresh fruit character. The seasoned barrels contribute textural richness and integrate tannins without overwhelming oak influence. This combination results in a wine that expresses its terroir clearly while gaining the structural backbone needed for ageing.

Serve this wine slightly cooler than typical reds, around 14-16°C, to highlight its elegant structure and mineral freshness. The medium-bodied nature and fine-grained tannins make it versatile with food - try it with duck breast, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses like Comté. Given its 96-point rating and old-vine pedigree, consider decanting for 30 minutes to allow the aromatics to fully develop. The wine's balance of power and finesse means it will reward both immediate drinking and cellaring for 8-10 years.

Granite soils are fundamental to Moulin-à-Vent's distinctive character, providing excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the vines during dry periods. The decomposed granite creates a sandy, mineral-rich environment that produces wines with remarkable precision and a distinctive 'rocky' minerality you can actually taste. This terroir contributes to the wine's fine-grained texture and the dramatic mineral freshness on the finish. The granite influence is what separates Moulin-à-Vent from other Beaujolais crus grown on different soil types like clay or limestone.
