Why do we love this wine?

Halliday Wine Companion calls this, “The star of the Jim Barry Show.” This is the utmost peak of a legendary winery we’re looking at here. Surprisingly approachable, considering the sheer power they’ve harnessed in the bottle, it’s nevertheless an absolute beast that will sit out a long sentence in the cellar and still come out fighting. There’s masses of gutsy fruit flavour, enthroned in oak and reigned in by beautifully integrated tannin. Full-bodied, sure, but it carries itself with stylish elegance befitting its premium status, and is not at all overbearing. Powerful, but perfectly balanced.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Armagh represents the pinnacle of Jim Barry's winemaking, sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1968 on terra rossa soil over limestone. This unique terroir, combined with meticulous vineyard management and extended oak maturation, creates a wine of extraordinary concentration and complexity that stands apart from typical Clare Valley expressions. The combination of old vines, exceptional site selection, and premium winemaking techniques results in what critics consistently recognise as one of Australia's finest Shiraz wines.

The 2022 Armagh is built for extended cellaring and will continue to develop beautifully for 15-20 years or more. While surprisingly approachable now due to its excellent balance, the wine will reach its optimal drinking window between 2030-2040, when the powerful tannins fully integrate and the complex flavours reach perfect harmony. The wine's structure and concentration suggest it could potentially age gracefully for several decades, making it an excellent candidate for special occasion cellaring.

The Armagh's power and elegance make it perfect for rich, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity without being overwhelmed. Consider slow-cooked lamb with rosemary and garlic, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison or duck. The wine's allspice and almond notes also complement dishes with warming spices, such as Moroccan tagines or barbecued meats with spice rubs, while its refined tannin structure pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses.

The 2022 vintage has earned remarkable scores including 99 points from Decanter and 97 points from multiple respected critics because it represents a perfect expression of Clare Valley Shiraz at its finest. The wine demonstrates exceptional balance between power and elegance, with seamlessly integrated oak and tannins that support rather than dominate the intense fruit flavours. This combination of technical excellence, terroir expression, and aging potential places it among Australia's most prestigious wine offerings.

Serve The Armagh at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics and flavours to fully express themselves. Given its youth and concentration, decanting 1-2 hours before serving will help soften the tannins and allow the wine to open up, revealing its full spectrum of flavours and aromas. For older vintages or if drinking immediately, even longer decanting times of 3-4 hours can be beneficial, as this wine has the structure to handle extended aeration without losing its character.
