This is a big deal. The term 'Ancestor Vines' is reserved only for vineyards planted over 125 years ago. This places them as right up there with some of the oldest living shiraz vines in the entire world, and in this case, they absolutely live up to the hype. Reviewers have called this wine "stunningly beautiful", we couldn't've said it better ourselves.

Why do we love this wine?

As a general rule, the older the vines, the better the wines. But why? Well, the simplified answer is that as grape vines mature they begin to produce less fruit. As a result, all of the energy, all of the sun and soil, all of the flavour is condensed into less grapes, so you end up with highly concentrated, perfectly balanced fruit with the capacity to create extremely low quantity, extremely high quality wines that could out-last religion. This gorgeous wine is everything you'd expect from these world-famous vines and more. A complex bouquet of dark berries, cake spice, charcuterie and cedar lure in the lucky drinker and sets them up for a beautifully concentrated palate that feels both nuanced and assertive. And that's it, this wine imposes itself on any situation that it finds itself in, in the best possible way. Completely captivating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ancestor vines are typically several decades old, and their age brings remarkable benefits to wine quality. As vines mature, they naturally reduce their fruit production, concentrating all their energy into fewer grapes. This results in intensely flavoured, perfectly balanced fruit that creates wines with exceptional depth and complexity. The deep root systems of old vines also access unique mineral profiles from deeper soil layers, contributing to the wine's distinctive character and aging potential.

The Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for producing rich, full-bodied Shiraz with intense concentration. The region's signature style emphasises dark fruit flavours, spice complexity, and robust tannin structure - all evident in this wine's chocolate, pepper, and plum characteristics. Barossa's established winemaking heritage, combined with its diverse soil types, allows producers like Maverick to craft Shiraz that balances power with elegance.

This wine's rich, assertive character and complex flavour profile make it perfect for hearty, flavourful dishes. The chocolate and plum notes complement grilled red meats, slow-cooked lamb, and aged cheeses beautifully. The pepper spice and charcuterie aromatics also make it an excellent match for barbecued meats, game dishes, or even dark chocolate desserts. Its full body and concentrated flavours can stand up to bold, umami-rich cuisines.

Given the concentrated fruit from ancestor vines and the wine's full-bodied structure, this Shiraz has excellent aging potential. The description mentions these wines have 'the capacity to out-last religion', suggesting decades of cellaring ability. While delicious now, the wine will likely develop additional complexity over 10-15 years, with the tannins softening and secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth emerging. Proper storage in cool, dark conditions will maximise its longevity.

A 97-point rating from Wine Orbit places this wine in the 'extraordinary' category, indicating exceptional quality that stands out even among premium wines. This score reflects the wine's perfect balance of concentration, complexity, and finesse that comes from the ancestor vines. Such high ratings typically indicate wines with remarkable aging potential, distinctive regional character, and flawless winemaking technique. It's recognition that this Shiraz represents the pinnacle of what Barossa Valley can produce.
