The return of one of our most-requested wines of all time. The Blend - from Australian winemaking savant Dave Powell - is a remarkable wine. Breadth, weight, rusticity, opulence - there's not a box it doesn't tick. It is a wine approaching perfection. Don't let the name fool you, this is 100% Barossa shiraz.

Why do we love this wine?

We thought this wine was gone forever, we grieved, we healed, we moved on... and then we got a call... and not a second too late. Just when we thought Powell & Son couldn’t impress us more, they raised the bar higher than it’s ever been before. This seems too good to be true, right? We’re pinching ourselves too: it’s not every day that you get the best sub-regions of the Barossa (Marananga playing a big part of that), with the fruit of each vineyard separately nurtured and carefully blended after 18 months ageing in French oak. The name says it all, but this isn’t just any blend: it’s the king of blends. All shiraz. All star fruit. All the best oak. All in one neat little parcel. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, truly nothing will.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the art of blending by combining fruit from the best sub-regions of the Barossa, particularly Marananga, with each vineyard's fruit separately nurtured before blending. This approach allows the winemaker to balance the unique characteristics of different terroirs, creating complexity and depth that single vineyard wines can't achieve. The result is a harmonious expression that captures the essence of multiple premium sites in one bottle.

The extended French oak ageing adds layers of vanilla, spice, and subtle tannin structure while allowing the wine's natural fruit flavours to integrate beautifully. French oak is prized for its fine grain and elegant influence, contributing to the wine's full-bodied palate weight without overwhelming the blackberry and plum characteristics. This maturation period also allows the earthy Barossa terroir notes to develop and marry with the oak-derived complexity.

Marananga sits in the heart of the Barossa Valley and is renowned for producing some of Australia's most concentrated and age-worthy Shiraz. The sub-region's unique combination of red clay soils, elevation, and microclimate creates ideal conditions for Shiraz to develop intense colour, rich fruit flavours, and the distinctive earthy minerality that Barossa is famous for. Many of Australia's most celebrated Shiraz wines originate from this prestigious area.

The wine's rich blackberry and plum flavours, combined with its earthy undertones and French oak influence, make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats. The full-bodied structure can stand up to strong flavours like aged cheeses, barbecued meats with smoky marinades, or hearty stews. The wine's complexity also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme.

The 2023 vintage represents a culmination of ideal growing conditions and expert winemaking, resulting in what's described as Powell & Son's highest achievement yet. Barossa's 2023 season allowed for optimal fruit development, enabling the careful selection and separate nurturing of fruit from premium vineyard sites. This vintage showcases the region's ability to produce concentrated, well-balanced Shiraz that expresses both power and elegance in equal measure.
