Why do we love this wine?

This wine will exceed your expectations; with layers of flavourful complexity, you’ll discover something new with every sip. The wine opens with an array of forest fruits of blackcurrant, blackberry and ripened plums. Non fruit characteristics are already shining through, especially over the palate where you’ll be treated to notes of dark chocolate, fresh coffee bean and dustings of cacao. The tannins are fine grained. The length on the finish just keeps going and the 15 months this shiraz spent in French oak prior to bottling ensures you can cellar this and revel in its maturity for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

The wine's remarkable 97-point rating from Ray Jordan and consistent 95-96 point scores across multiple critics reflect its exceptional complexity and craftsmanship. The 15 months in French oak has created a harmonious integration of fruit and non-fruit characteristics, while the old vine fruit from Barossa provides concentrated flavours that develop beautifully in the glass. This level of critical acclaim typically indicates a wine that will age gracefully and represent outstanding value for its quality tier.

With its full-bodied structure, fine-grained tannins, and 15 months of French oak maturation, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential spanning 10-15 years or more. The wine's current complexity suggests it's already drinking beautifully, but the structured tannins and concentrated old vine fruit will continue evolving, developing tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers often peaks between 8-12 years but can reward patient collectors for decades.

The wine's rich dark chocolate and coffee bean notes make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts. The plum and blackcurrant fruit flavours complement game meats like venison, while the French oak integration allows it to pair beautifully with aged cheeses and charcuterie. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or dark chocolate desserts that echo the wine's natural cacao notes.

Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Shiraz, producing wines with intense concentration and distinctive regional character. The area's old vine plantings, some dating back to the 1840s, yield lower quantities but higher quality fruit with complex flavour development. This wine's 'Old Vine' designation indicates fruit from vines typically 35+ years old, which develop deeper root systems and produce more concentrated, nuanced grapes that translate into the layered complexity evident in this bottle.

The 'Black Market Deal' designation typically indicates this is a premium wine offered at exceptional value, often from a renowned producer who prefers to remain anonymous for commercial reasons. Given the outstanding critic scores (95-97 points) and quality indicators like old vine fruit and extended French oak maturation, this represents significant savings compared to similar quality wines sold under their original labels. These deals allow wine lovers to access premium Barossa Shiraz at a fraction of the typical retail price.
