There are great Australian wines. And then there is RunRig. This is one of the most celebrated releases in the history of Australian winemaking - a Barossa shiraz of such extraordinary depth, concentration and complexity that it genuinely belongs in the conversation with the finest wines on earth. The 2016 vintage is a complete masterpiece. That's not hyperbole. That's just what it is.

Why do we love this wine?

98% Shiraz, 2% Viognier, and a winemaking vision that has been refined and perfected over decades. Blueberry, blackberry and an elegant pencil shaving quality on the nose that gives way to a palate of almost overwhelming intensity - plush, velvety and fruit-stained, yet structured and savoury with hints of mocha and black olive on a finish that seems to go on indefinitely. This wine has a drinking window that stretches two decades. The experts suggest opening the first bottle around the ten-year mark - which means right now is exactly when things start getting seriously interesting. A once-in-a-cellar opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The small addition of Viognier is a traditional Rhône Valley technique that Torbreck has masterfully adopted in the Barossa. This white grape doesn't just add aromatic lift - it actually helps stabilise the deep colour of Shiraz while contributing floral notes and a silky texture. The co-fermentation creates a more complex wine than Shiraz alone, adding layers of perfume and elegance that complement the power.

The 2016 RunRig achieved the rare feat of a perfect 100-point score from Wine Advocate, with multiple critics rating it 97-98 points. This vintage captured the ideal balance between Barossa's signature power and remarkable finesse, showing both immediate appeal and extraordinary ageing potential. The combination of optimal growing conditions and Torbreck's decades of winemaking refinement created what many consider a benchmark Australian Shiraz.

With a drinking window spanning two decades, this wine rewards patience but doesn't demand it. The experts suggest the ten-year mark (around now for the 2016) as when the wine truly begins to show its complexity, as primary fruit integrates with developing tertiary characters. You can enjoy it now for its power and purity, or cellar it for up to 20 years to experience its full evolution into something truly extraordinary.

The wine's overwhelming intensity and savoury elements like black olive and mocha make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes. Think slow-braised beef, lamb shanks, or aged steaks where the wine's structure can stand up to bold flavours. The elegant pencil shaving quality and velvety texture also pair beautifully with game meats or strong cheeses, where the wine's complexity can shine alongside equally complex flavours.

Torbreck's vision combines old-world Rhône techniques with Barossa terroir, creating wines that show both power and elegance rather than just brute force. Their decades of refinement show in the wine's ability to be 'overwhelming' yet structured, fruit-driven yet savoury. This balance between intensity and finesse, plus their commitment to traditional blending with Viognier, sets them apart in a region known more for bold, single-varietal expressions.
