Why do we love this wine?

2022 was an outstanding vintage in Margaret River - a cold, wet winter followed by a warm, generous summer produced fruit of exceptional concentration and quality. And in Xanadu's hands, that fruit has become something genuinely outstanding. Blackcurrant, mulberry and dark fruit at the core, with cedary oak and a firm, fine-grained tannin structure that gives it both immediate appeal and real cellaring potential. Powerful and energetic, but with an elegance and focus that stops it from ever feeling heavy-handed. Drink it now with something from the grill or put it away for a few years and watch it develop. Either way, for Margaret River Cabernet at this level, the price is an absolute gift.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2022 vintage in Margaret River was characterised by ideal weather conditions - a cold, wet winter that replenished soil moisture, followed by a warm, generous summer that allowed grapes to ripen slowly and develop exceptional concentration. This combination created fruit with intense flavours and balanced acidity, which translates to wines with both immediate drinking pleasure and excellent ageing potential. Margaret River's maritime climate and gravelly soils are particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, making this vintage a standout example of the region's capabilities.

With its firm, fine-grained tannin structure and concentrated fruit profile, this Xanadu Cabernet has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The wine's powerful yet elegant framework will allow it to develop greater complexity over time, with the primary blackcurrant and mulberry flavours evolving into more savoury, earthy notes. The cedary oak will integrate further, and the tannins will soften while maintaining the wine's structural integrity, rewarding patient cellaring with increased depth and sophistication.

This powerful Margaret River Cabernet is perfectly suited to rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity. Grilled or roasted red meats like beef steaks, lamb chops, or venison work beautifully, as the wine's tannins help cut through fat while complementing the meat's savoury flavours. The wine's dark fruit character and cedary oak also pair excellently with aged hard cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, or even dark chocolate desserts for those who enjoy wine with sweets.

While the specific meaning of 'DJL' isn't detailed in the wine's description, such designations in premium Australian wines typically refer to either vineyard blocks, winemaker initials, or special selection criteria. Given Xanadu's status as a Halliday Top 100 and Five Red Star rated winery, this designation likely indicates a premium tier within their Cabernet Sauvignon range, possibly representing fruit from their finest vineyard sites or a special winemaking approach that elevates this wine above their standard offerings.

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon is renowned for its elegance and European-style structure, differing from the more powerful, concentrated styles found in regions like Coonawarra or Barossa Valley. The region's maritime influence and afternoon sea breezes help maintain acidity and prevent over-ripening, resulting in wines with refined tannins and excellent balance between power and finesse. This Xanadu example showcases these regional characteristics perfectly, offering the concentration and depth that Margaret River is famous for while maintaining the elegance that sets it apart from Australia's warmer wine regions.
