Giant Steps are the top of the tree when it comes to Yarra Valley pinot. How they have managed to get this much wine into the bottle, at this price, is confounding.

Why do we love this wine?

True leaders of the Australian wine industry: ranked and incredible #2 on Halliday's top 100 wineries. There is so much hype around the release of these wines, and the lofty standard has not only been met but exceeded with the 2024 vintage. Ripe and juicy, with prickly little tannins that build alongside the acid to deliver a complex, structured, powerful little wine. Sour cherry and anise with rhubarb freshness and tart, winter strawberry. This is so generous and joyful - an utter delight to drink.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra estate and grower fruit. 30% whole bunches. A very bright crimson purple. Pretty and complex with aromas of red cherry skins and rhubarb together with some pink peppercorn spice and a light savoury edge. More approachable than the '23. As a young wine, the medium-bodied palate is spicy, silky and long. It'll probably age well but it's so good to drink now that there's no need to bother!

Frequently Asked Questions

Giant Steps holds the prestigious #2 position on Halliday's Top 100 Wineries list and maintains a Five Red Star rating, placing them among Australia's elite producers. Their consistent excellence stems from their deep understanding of Yarra Valley terroir and meticulous winemaking approach. This recognition reflects not just individual wine quality, but their overall contribution to elevating Australian Pinot Noir on the global stage.

The 2024 vintage has exceeded the already lofty expectations set by Giant Steps' previous releases, earning an exceptional 95 points from Halliday Wine Companion. This vintage showcases the perfect balance of ripeness and structure that defines great Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. The combination of generous fruit character with complex tannin structure suggests this vintage will age beautifully while being immediately enjoyable.

The wine's sour cherry and wild berry profile, combined with its light body and structured tannins, makes it incredibly food-friendly. It pairs beautifully with duck, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes where the wine's acidity can cut through richness. The rhubarb freshness and winter strawberry notes also complement charcuterie, soft cheeses, and herb-crusted lamb, while the elegant structure won't overpower lighter fare.

Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the grape to retain its natural acidity while developing complex flavours. The region's temperature variations between day and night help preserve the delicate aromatics that make this wine so expressive. Giant Steps has mastered working with these conditions to produce Pinot Noir that showcases both power and elegance, characteristics that define the best examples from this renowned region.

This Pinot Noir features 'prickly little tannins' that build complexity alongside the natural acidity, creating a structured yet approachable wine. These fine-grained tannins will integrate beautifully over the next 5-7 years, allowing the sour cherry and anise flavours to evolve into more complex tertiary notes. While delightful to drink now, the wine's excellent structure suggests it will reward cellaring, developing greater depth and sophistication with time.
