This masterpiece was created for lovers of big, rich, imposing Barossa shiraz. A throwback, or perhaps a nod, to the old-school Barossa styles that made the region (and probably the whole country) famous. It's hard not to get a bit caught up in this wine, beautifully done.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

22 months in 20% new oak is the first thing you need to know about this beautiful beast. A rich, concentrated and complex whirl of dark chocolate, black fruits and cedar. The tannins are plush and juicy but silky on the finish. As we said above, this is truly a wine for those that yearn for the Barossa shiraz of old. Drink it with a knife and fork, pour it on your steak - all those clichés. It's unreal. We tried cellaring this one at home but quickly learnt something strange... this wine's like's a mozzie bite, the more you tell yourself not to touch it, not to think about it, the harder it gets because it's just heaven to scratch that itch. There's no way we'll be able to keep our hands off this for the next 10 - 15 years, but anyone that could would be in for a very special surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine embodies the traditional Barossa approach with 22 months in 20% new oak, creating the rich, concentrated profile that made the region famous. The combination of dark chocolate, black fruits and cedar reflects the bold, unapologetic style that Barossa pioneered in the 1960s-80s. Unlike many modern Australian Shiraz that favour fruit-forward expressions, this wine maintains the structural complexity and oak integration that collectors associate with legendary Barossa producers.

While the wine is irresistibly delicious now, it has the structure to reward patient collectors for 10-15 years. The plush tannins and oak integration suggest it will develop tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco and spice over time. However, given its immediate appeal and the temptation factor mentioned by the producer, many wine lovers find it difficult to resist opening bottles early - which isn't necessarily wrong given its current drinking pleasure.

This wine demands substantial dishes that can match its intensity and rich tannin structure. Think char-grilled steaks, slow-braised lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's cedar and dark chocolate notes can complement rather than overpower. The full-bodied palate weight means it can handle rich sauces and marinades, while the silky finish prevents it from being too aggressive with more delicate proteins like duck or venison.

The dual 96-point ratings from Ken Gargett and Wine Orbit reflect the wine's exceptional balance between power and elegance. Critics likely recognised the skillful oak handling - 20% new oak provides structure without overwhelming the fruit expression. The 2021 vintage was particularly favourable in Barossa, allowing for optimal ripeness while maintaining acidity, resulting in wines that combine immediate appeal with long-term ageing potential.

Limited edition releases typically represent a winemaker's finest expression, using premium fruit parcels and extended maturation periods. The 'No.1' designation suggests this is Craneford's flagship Shiraz, likely sourced from their best vineyard blocks and given extra attention during winemaking. The extended 22-month oak regime and resulting complexity indicate this wine represents the pinnacle of their production, designed to showcase both the vintage character and the producer's winemaking philosophy.
