That hallmark 'Alice's' intensity is firing on all cylinders this vintage. We're talking dark-chocolate-dipped black cherries, blackcurrant and dark cherry compote rolling through with baking spices, mocha, blueberry pie, subtle cedar notes, chocolate bullets and earthy undertones all jostling for attention.

Why do we love this wine?

The whole thing feels like a wave of the purest dark and black fruits you'll find, backed by compact, ferrous-edged, powdery tannins and a velvety flow that slowly trails off with serious elegance. The vines were planted back in 1997 on ancient slaty siltstone mixed with dark brown clays and loam - and you can taste that terroir in every sip. The siltstone shows up as midpalate spiciness and savoury tannins, while the brown clay lends that gorgeous chocolate/mocha spectrum with fruit leaning towards raspberry and redcurrant. The result is a particularly food-friendly shiraz that's as versatile as it is delicious. This is concentrated and complex - seriously impressive stuff.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

The trademark Alices concentration is in full swing with this release. Dark-chocolate-dipped black cherries, blackcurrant and dark cherry compote fruit characters with layers of baking spices, mocha, blueberry pie, gentle cedar tones, chocolate bullets and earth. There's a leading citrus blossom note on the palate, then a sweep of the most pure dark and black fruits, compact, ferrous-edged, powdery tannins and a velvety flow as the wine slowly trails off. 95 Points. - Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

The vineyard sits on a fascinating geological foundation of ancient slaty siltstone mixed with dark brown clays and loam, planted in 1997. This unique soil composition creates a beautiful duality in the wine - the siltstone contributes midpalate spiciness and savoury tannins that give structure, while the brown clay delivers rich chocolate and mocha notes with bright fruit flavours. It's a perfect example of how Barossa's diverse soils can produce distinctly different expressions of Shiraz within the same region.

While Barossa is famous for powerful, fruit-driven Shiraz, Alice's Block shows remarkable elegance and food-friendliness that sets it apart from the region's more bombastic examples. The ferrous-edged, powdery tannins and velvety flow demonstrate restraint and finesse, while still delivering the concentrated dark fruit character Barossa is known for. This represents the modern evolution of Barossa Shiraz - maintaining power but with greater sophistication and versatility.

The wine's food-friendly nature and complex flavour profile make it incredibly versatile for pairing. The mocha and chocolate notes complement grilled red meats beautifully, while the raspberry and spice elements work wonderfully with game dishes or rich pasta with mushroom-based sauces. The savoury tannins and midpalate spiciness also make it an excellent match for aged cheeses or charcuterie, creating harmonious flavour bridges.

James Halliday's 95-point rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance of power and elegance, which is notoriously difficult to achieve in full-bodied Shiraz. The concentrated complexity, pristine fruit expression, and sophisticated tannin structure demonstrate winemaking excellence that goes beyond simple fruit intensity. Greenock Creek's iconic status in the Barossa, combined with this wine's ability to showcase terroir so distinctly, represents the pinnacle of Australian Shiraz craftsmanship.

While the 2023 shows beautifully now with its velvety flow and accessible fruit, this style of concentrated, well-structured Shiraz will reward cellaring for 8-12 years. The powdery tannins will integrate further, allowing the terroir-driven spice and savoury elements to become more prominent, while the dark fruit will develop secondary complexity. However, its current elegance and food-friendliness make it equally enjoyable for immediate consumption, especially with appropriate decanting.
