When we get a chance to stock up on some reds from one of the most famous names in McLaren Vale, we take it! From a single vineyard, boasting nearly 100-year-old bush vines comes this 95pt grenache that’s equal parts bright and brooding - red fruits, spice and florals carried by fine tannins and lively acidity. A beautifully punchy expression of the region.

Why do we love this wine?

This single vineyard release shows why old-vine fruit makes all the difference. Deep purple-red in the glass, the nose bursts with raspberry pastilles, strawberry, cherry and that classically grenache-y touch of orange zest. Smoky peppercorn, spice and lavender sit behind, adding layers of intrigue. The palate is vibrant and lively, showing a medley of red fruits with hints of citrus and dried herbs. Fine, dusty tannins provide focus and structure, while a refreshing crunch of acidity keeps everything bright and mouthwatering. It’s full-bodied yet silky, with the balance to drink beautifully now and the structure to reward time in the cellar.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a single vineyard release crafted from old-vine fruit, which concentrates flavours and adds complexity that younger vines simply cannot achieve. Old vines produce smaller yields but more intense, nuanced fruit with deeper root systems that access unique terroir characteristics. The combination of McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and these mature vines creates the perfect conditions for Grenache to express its full potential, resulting in the wine's exceptional 95-point rating from Huon Hooke.

McLaren Vale's warm, dry climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for Grenache, allowing the variety to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity. The region's proximity to the ocean provides cooling sea breezes that help preserve the wine's vibrant fruit character and prevent over-ripening. This terroir influence is evident in the wine's balance of full-bodied richness with refreshing acidity, plus those distinctive Mediterranean herb notes that McLaren Vale Grenache is renowned for.

The wine's combination of red fruit intensity, spice, and fine tannins makes it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Mediterranean cuisine that echoes its flavour profile. Think lamb with rosemary, grilled vegetables with herbs, or charcuterie boards featuring aged cheeses. The wine's silky texture and bright acidity also complement richer dishes like duck confit or beef bourguignon, while its spicy notes pair beautifully with North African tagines or Spanish paella.

This Grenache offers the best of both worlds - it's drinking beautifully now with vibrant fruit and accessible tannins, yet has the structure to reward cellaring for 8-12 years. Drinking it young showcases the bright raspberry and cherry flavours, while cellaring will allow the wine to develop more complex secondary characters like leather, earth, and dried fruit. The fine, dusty tannins and balanced acidity provide the backbone needed for graceful ageing, typical of quality McLaren Vale Grenache.

The orange zest note is a classic hallmark of well-made Grenache, indicating both varietal authenticity and quality winemaking. This citrus character comes from compounds in the grape skins and adds brightness that prevents the wine from becoming overly heavy despite its full-bodied nature. It's particularly prominent in Grenache from warmer climates like McLaren Vale, where the variety can achieve full phenolic ripeness while maintaining this distinctive aromatic complexity that sets it apart from other red varieties.
