This wine was described by a reviewer as "gorgeously fragrant", we'd go a step further, we'd say it's so fragrant that if you popped a bottle on a Wednesday, you'd still be smelling ripe blood plums on Friday morning. It's not just the nose either, cling onto your socks Mofo, the first sip of this will knock them clean off.

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit for this hottie was sourced from 63 to 100-year-old vines in the famed Marananga sub-region of Barossa. Destemmed (with 20% stalks added - it is grenache after all), matured in seasoned French oak and shipped off all around the country to be enjoyed by thirsty little Mofos like us! Seems simple enough right? Wrong! This is where the nuance comes in, the slope of the Marananga hills, the soil type, the brand of the barrels and, most importnantly, the know-how of the winemaker. Luck for us this winemaker knows everything there is to know about the land, the soil, the barrels and whatever else you could possibly think of. A smart wine made by a smart, albeit mysterious, man!

Frequently Asked Questions

Adding stalks back to destemmed Grenache is a traditional technique that enhances the wine's structure and complexity. The stems contribute tannins and spice notes while allowing better air circulation during fermentation, which is particularly beneficial for Grenache as it naturally has softer tannins. This practice helps create the wine's distinctive white pepper character and adds textural depth to complement the cherry fruit flavours.

Marananga sits on elevated slopes in the Barossa Valley, providing ideal conditions for Grenache with its warm days and cool nights that preserve acidity. The region's ancient soils and hillside positioning create natural drainage and stress the vines appropriately, concentrating flavours in the grapes. The combination of old vine material (63-100 years) and this terroir produces Grenache with exceptional depth and the spicy, peppery characteristics this variety is renowned for.

Old vines naturally produce lower yields but dramatically higher quality fruit with concentrated flavours and complexity. These ancient Grenache vines have developed extensive root systems that access deep soil nutrients and water sources, creating wines with greater mineral depth and resilience. The mature vine wood also contributes to more stable fermentation and the development of secondary flavours, explaining why this wine achieves such impressive ratings across multiple critics.

The cherry and spice profile with white pepper notes makes this Grenache perfect for Mediterranean cuisine, particularly lamb dishes with herbs, barbecued meats, or charcuterie boards. The medium body and balanced tannins from seasoned French oak won't overpower lighter fare like roasted chicken or mushroom risotto. The wine's spicy character also complements Middle Eastern spices and aged cheeses beautifully.

Black Market Deals often feature wines from established, premium producers who prefer anonymity to offer exceptional value without affecting their regular pricing structure. This allows renowned winemakers to share their craft at accessible prices while maintaining their brand positioning. The mystery adds intrigue, but the quality speaks for itself - evidenced by the five-star rating and the sophisticated winemaking techniques employed in this exceptional Barossa Grenache.
