When you’ve been making wine in Australia since the 1800s, you tend to know a thing or two about shiraz. Hardys built their name on bold thinking and even bolder drinking reds, and this bottle is a cracking reminder of why they’re still a household name all these years later. Oh, and the price will genuinely knock your socks off!

Why do we love this wine?

It’s shiraz through and through, that's undeniable. Completely opaque in the glass, it opens with a rush of mulberry, blueberry and ripe plum, with a dusting of spice and a little milk-chocolate richness swirling around behind it. There’s a hint of white pepper for good measure, just to keep things lively. The palate follows the same script but really takes things up a gear. Tannins are silky but present, giving it proper structure without turning it into a chew-fest. A touch of French oak rounds things out and stretches the finish nicely. But that's not the best bit... For a wine with this kind of pedigree and punch, the price is borderline ridiculous. It tastes exactly like good shiraz should - generous fruit, savoury detail, tidy structure - and it’ll happily cellar for five to ten years if you’ve got the patience.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Hardy's HRB Shiraz exemplifies the classic Australian approach to the variety - bold, fruit-forward, and built for pleasure. The combination of mulberry, blueberry and plum creates a distinctly Australian flavour profile that's more generous than Old World Syrah. Its full-bodied nature with silky tannins represents the modern Australian winemaking philosophy of balancing power with drinkability, making it accessible now while having the structure to age gracefully.

This 2020 vintage has excellent cellaring potential of five to ten years thanks to its proper tannin structure and French oak integration. Australian Shiraz typically develops beautiful secondary characteristics during aging - expect the bright fruit to evolve into more complex leather, tobacco and earthy notes. The wine's current balance suggests it will drink beautifully now for immediate gratification or reward patient collectors with increased complexity over the next decade.

The wine's rich fruit character and silky tannins make it perfect for hearty Australian fare like barbecued lamb, beef steaks, or kangaroo. The white pepper notes and savoury undertones also complement game meats beautifully. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese - the wine's structure can handle strong flavours while its fruit sweetness provides balance to salty, umami-rich foods.

Hardy's reputation as an iconic producer combined with multiple gold medals creates a wine that typically commands premium prices, yet this offers exceptional quality-to-price ratio. The 'Dangerous Value' rating reflects how this wine delivers the complexity and structure of much more expensive bottles. Hardy's scale and expertise allow them to source quality fruit and apply sophisticated winemaking techniques while keeping costs reasonable for consumers.

The French oak adds sophistication to this otherwise fruit-driven Australian Shiraz, providing subtle vanilla and spice notes without overwhelming the varietal character. French oak is more restrained than American oak, allowing the wine's natural mulberry and plum flavours to shine while adding structural complexity. This treatment extends the finish and gives the wine its cellaring potential, creating a more refined style that bridges traditional Australian boldness with European elegance.
