Why do we love this wine?

If anyone knows how to get the best out of the Adelaide Hills, it's House of Hahndorf. And this is the the Hills doing what it does best - producing pinot noir with elegance, energy and a drinkability that makes the bottle disappear much faster than planned. Bramble fruit, warming spice and a forest floor earthiness on the nose that signals cool-climate complexity before you've even taken a sip. The palate delivers fleshy blueberry and raspberry fruit, carried along by fresh acidity and fine structural tannins that give it genuine shape and presence without ever feeling heavy. Brilliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Adelaide Hills' elevated altitude and cool climate create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. This extended growing season develops the complex flavour compounds that give this wine its characteristic bramble fruit and forest floor earthiness. The region's diurnal temperature variation - warm days and cool nights - helps preserve the delicate aromatics that make Pinot Noir so expressive.

Forest floor earthiness refers to those complex, savoury aromas reminiscent of decomposing leaves, damp soil, and woodland undergrowth. In cool-climate Pinot Noir like this House of Hahndorf, these earthy notes develop from the grape's natural tendency to express terroir - the environmental factors of where it's grown. This earthiness balances the bright fruit flavours and adds layers of complexity that distinguish quality Pinot Noir from simpler red wines.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature, around 14-16°C, to highlight its fresh acidity and fine tannin structure. The medium body and elegant profile make it incredibly food-friendly - try it with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Decanting isn't necessary, but opening the bottle 30 minutes before serving allows the warming spice notes to fully develop.

The 'dangerous value' rating suggests this wine delivers quality that far exceeds its price point, making it dangerously easy to drink more than intended. House of Hahndorf has achieved the difficult balance of producing accessible, immediately enjoyable Pinot Noir while maintaining the complexity and structure typically found in more expensive bottles. The combination of fleshy fruit, fine tannins, and genuine presence creates a wine that punches well above its weight class.

While this Pinot Noir is beautifully approachable now with its fresh acidity and vibrant fruit, the fine structural tannins and cool-climate complexity suggest it has good cellaring potential. The wine's balance and presence indicate it could develop additional savoury complexity over 3-5 years, though its current drinkability means there's no need to wait. Consider buying multiple bottles to enjoy both now and later.
