This is a very smart wine. It feels very harmonious, there's fruit intensity but it's not *too* fruity, there's present oak but it's not *too* overpowering, there's spice and tannin but they're not *too* drying. Everything has been worked into this classy number in thoughtful moderation and the result is a wine greater than the sum of its parts.

Why do we love this wine?

From the well known, hand-tended, vineyards of the Willunga sub-region of McLaren Vale, picked in the (widely lauded) year of 2021 - it's safe to say we were holding this one to a pretty high standard. Well, this wine exceeded even our lofty expectations. Juicy dark mulberry and black cherry, vibrant spiced plum and chocolate characters are expressed with both intensity and complexity. Subtle, but ever present, oak characters manifest themselves in slight chocolate and vanilla notes along with fine grained tannins and build to a silky, spice driven finish. Happy to sit in the cellar for 15+ years, but why delay happiness right?

Wine Orbit

Captivating and complex, the wine shows dark fruit richness, tar, smoked game, dark chocolate and roasted nut characters on the nose. The palate offers excellent concentration and textured mouthfeel, splendidly framed by fine, grainy tannins, making it robust and lingering with loads of delicious flavours. At its best: now to 2039. - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as exceptional in McLaren Vale, with ideal growing conditions that produced wines of remarkable concentration and balance. This particular year allowed the Shiraz grapes to develop intense fruit flavors while maintaining the elegant structure that defines premium McLaren Vale wines. The combination of perfect weather patterns and the hand-tended vineyard management resulted in grapes with optimal ripeness and complexity.

Willunga sits in the cooler, elevated areas of McLaren Vale, where ancient soils and maritime influences create ideal conditions for Shiraz. The sub-region's unique terroir contributes to the wine's distinctive spiced plum and dark berry characteristics, while the cooler climate helps retain natural acidity and develops the fine-grained tannin structure. This terroir expression is what separates premium McLaren Vale Shiraz from other Australian regions.

This rich, complex Shiraz pairs beautifully with robust dishes that can match its intensity - think grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or rich game meats like venison. The wine's chocolate and vanilla oak notes also complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or dark sauces. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, which will highlight the wine's spiced plum characteristics.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant fruit expression, it has the structure and complexity to evolve gracefully over 15+ years. Cellaring will allow the tannins to soften further and develop more tertiary flavors like leather and earth, while the fruit will become more integrated with the oak. However, given its current balance and the exceptional 2021 vintage quality, there's no wrong time to enjoy it.

A 96-point score from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that rivals some of Australia's most prestigious wines. This rating suggests the wine demonstrates perfect varietal expression, outstanding balance, and remarkable complexity for its price point. Such high scores from multiple sources confirm this is a standout example of McLaren Vale Shiraz that punches well above its weight class.
