Why do we love this wine?

Here you go: immaculately made, impeccably cellared shiraz from the best of the best. Now that is a good deal. Six years on and this wine is absolutely singing. Ripe with blackberry, liquorice, spiced plums and only a slight hint of leather and kirsch. If we were able to write exactly what we think, we would be throwing a few swear words your way.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Barossa Shiraz has reached its sweet spot after six years of careful cellaring, developing complex secondary flavours that complement the primary fruit. The extended ageing has allowed the tannins to soften while integrating the blackberry and spiced plum notes with emerging leather and kirsch characteristics. This maturation process is particularly rewarding for full-bodied Shiraz, as it transforms the wine from youthful power into elegant complexity.

The Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for producing rich, full-bodied Shiraz with intense fruit concentration. This terroir contributes to the wine's distinctive liquorice and spice notes, which are hallmarks of premium Barossa Shiraz. The region's winemaking heritage, dating back over 150 years, ensures traditional techniques that enhance the wine's depth and complexity.

A 96-point score from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that surpasses most wines in its class. This rating reflects the wine's impeccable balance, complexity, and ageing potential, suggesting it represents outstanding value for money. Such high scores are typically reserved for wines that demonstrate perfect harmony between fruit, structure, and regional expression.

This rich, spice-driven Shiraz pairs beautifully with robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. The wine's liquorice and black cherry notes complement barbecued meats and dishes with earthy mushrooms or herbs like rosemary and thyme. The full-bodied structure can stand up to bold flavours, making it perfect for hearty winter stews or char-grilled steaks with peppercorn sauce.

This Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, having reached optimal maturity after six years of cellaring where all elements are perfectly integrated. While it's at its peak, quality Barossa Shiraz can continue evolving for another 5-8 years, developing more tertiary flavours like tobacco and earth. The choice depends on your preference - enjoy the current harmony of fruit and complexity, or cellar for even more developed savoury characteristics.
