This is the absolute best wine that Majella make. And they make some absolute crackers! The name honours George Patrick Lynn, patriarch of the Lynn family, who 'allowed' his sons Brian and Anthony to plant vines back in 1968 on the family's Coonawarra property "Majella." George passed away in 1976 aged only 50, but this wine stands as a proud tribute - a fine example of Coonawarra cabernet at its most transformative.

Why do we love this wine?

Nearly a decade under its belt already, and from a near legendary vintage for the region, this cabernet has many more years ahead of it - at least two decades of evolution to come. Deep maroon in the glass with very well integrated oak still evident alongside spices, black fruits, a hint of coconut, dried herbs, cassis, graphite, aniseed, coffee beans and more cassis. Leafy, minty cedar and eucalyptus add complexity and place us firmly in Coonawarra. Age has allowed the wine to blossom beautifully. Sweet cherries, blackcurrant and cassis flavours roll across a well-structured, medium-to-full-bodied frame with silky tannins and serious length. There's a dry tannic finish that grips without dominating. Finely balanced with intensity maintained at all times - this is cracking Coonawarra cabernet that represents some of the best the entire region has to offer. Impressive, distinctive and genuinely world-class.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2016 vintage is considered near legendary for Coonawarra, producing wines with exceptional concentration and structure. This particular year delivered ideal growing conditions that allowed Cabernet Sauvignon to develop intense fruit flavours while maintaining the region's signature eucalyptus and minty cedar characteristics. The vintage's success is evident in how beautifully this wine has evolved after nearly a decade, showcasing the perfect balance between power and elegance that defines great Coonawarra Cabernet.

This Cabernet Sauvignon has at least two decades of evolution ahead of it, making it an excellent candidate for long-term cellaring. Having already spent nearly a decade maturing, it's currently drinking beautifully but will continue to develop complexity and soften further. The wine's well-integrated tannins and serious structure suggest it will reach multiple peaks over the next 15-20 years, with the eucalyptus and graphite notes becoming more pronounced while the fruit maintains its intensity.

The wine's rich cassis and blackcurrant flavours, combined with its silky tannins and dry finish, make it perfect for red meat dishes. Try it with grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's eucalyptus and minty cedar notes will complement herbs and marinades. The integrated oak and coffee bean characteristics also pair beautifully with dishes featuring mushrooms or dark chocolate-based sauces.

GPL68 likely refers to a specific vineyard block or selection within Majella's Coonawarra holdings, indicating this wine comes from a particular parcel of vines that consistently produces exceptional fruit. Many premium wineries use such designations to identify their finest vineyard sites or clones, and given this wine's world-class quality and multiple 95+ point ratings, GPL68 clearly represents some of Majella's most prized Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the renowned Coonawarra region.

The tannins in this Majella are described as silky rather than aggressive, which is remarkable for such a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. Nearly a decade of bottle age has allowed the tannins to integrate beautifully, creating a dry finish that grips without dominating the palate. This evolution demonstrates how premium Coonawarra Cabernet develops - the initial firm structure softens over time while maintaining the wine's intensity and providing the backbone for extended ageing potential.
