This Barolo Riserva Gramolere is as good as it gets - a prestigious gem that's only produced in exceptional vintages when the fruit quality justifies the effort and patience required. The commitment here is extraordinary - this Barolo Riserva isn't released until approximately 7 years after harvest, allowing time for the wine to develop the complexity and elegance that defines beautiful Barolo.

Why do we love this wine?

This isn’t just any Barolo - it’s a hill-born, fossil-rich, old-vine wonder from the Gramolere vineyard in Monforte d’Alba. The vines are over 50 years old. The slope is so steep you’ve basically got to bring an ice axe to pick the grapes. So is it all worth it? Absolutely. Pure, elegant Barolo with structure, depth, and pedigree written all over it. Deep red, intense, and seductive. Aromas of ripe red fruits, warm spice, and earthy, mineral undertones that whisper “prestige.” The palate is silky yet structured, with perfectly integrated tannins and a finish that just sticks around in your brain like a good ballad.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Gramolere vineyard in Monforte d'Alba sits on incredibly steep, fossil-rich soils that force the 50+ year old vines to dig deep for nutrients, concentrating flavours dramatically. This challenging terrain, combined with the vineyard's elevation and exposure, creates the perfect stress conditions that Nebbiolo thrives under. The fossil-laden soils contribute those distinctive mineral undertones that separate great Barolo from merely good ones, while the old vines naturally limit yields for maximum intensity.

2017 was considered an exceptional vintage in Piedmont, delivering wines with both power and elegance - exactly what you see in this bottle's 95-point Vinous rating. The year provided ideal ripening conditions that allowed Nebbiolo to develop its signature aromatics while maintaining the structural backbone Barolo is famous for. This vintage strikes that perfect balance between the robust tannins needed for ageing and the fruit purity that makes the wine approachable relatively early.

Manzone Giovanni represents the artisanal side of Barolo production, focusing on small-batch, terroir-driven wines rather than mass market appeal. Their commitment to working with old vines and challenging vineyard sites like Gramolere demonstrates a dedication to quality over quantity that's increasingly rare. This boutique approach allows them to hand-select only the best fruit and employ traditional winemaking techniques that larger producers often can't justify economically.

This full-bodied Barolo demands rich, savoury companions that can match its intensity - think slow-braised beef with herbs, aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano, or wild game dishes. The wine's cherry and spice notes make it exceptional with duck or lamb, while its mineral backbone cuts beautifully through fatty meats. Traditional Piedmontese dishes like brasato al Barolo or tajarin pasta with white truffles create magical regional pairings that highlight both the wine's elegance and power.

While this 2017 is already showing beautifully with integrated tannins, Barolo Riserva from quality producers like Manzone typically peaks between 10-20 years after vintage. The wine's current silky structure suggests it's entering its drinking window now, but the depth and concentration indicate it will continue developing complexity through 2035-2040. Store it properly in cool, dark conditions and you'll be rewarded with evolving layers of tertiary aromatics - leather, tobacco, and dried roses that make aged Barolo so compelling.
