This Barolo Gramolere has been crafted since 1971, with Manzone Giovanni maintaining traditional methods that prioritise patient winemaking over quick profits. From a single south-southwest facing vineyard in Monforte d'Alba where 35 year old vines cling to steep slopes demanding hand work - and hard work it receives! This wine is a labour of love, and gee you can feel the love.

Why do we love this wine?

The vineyard sits on south-southwest facing slopes so steep that everything must be done manually - no machinery, just human hands and backs. 35 year old vines dig into calcareous sandy soil loaded with stones and fossils, creating the mineral backbone that defines this wine's character. Bright ruby red with subtle rim brightening signals developing complexity. The nose reveals roses (classic), fine oak and milk chocolate alongside grippy earthy tannins with cranberry brightness. Resinous tones frame the palate before slightly dusty tannins emerge on the finish - classic Barolo structure showing its personality. We're certainly feeling the love, now it's your turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Gramolere vineyard's extreme south-southwest facing slopes are so steep that all work must be done by hand, ensuring meticulous care of the 35-year-old Nebbiolo vines. The calcareous sandy soil is rich with stones and fossils, creating the distinctive mineral backbone that Barolo is renowned for. This challenging terrain, while labour-intensive, produces grapes with exceptional concentration and the terroir expression that defines great Barolo.

This 2020 displays the hallmark Barolo profile with its bright ruby colour and developing rim brightening, indicating proper ageing potential. The nose showcases the classic rose petal aromatics alongside fine oak integration and milk chocolate notes. The palate structure reveals Barolo's signature grippy tannins with cranberry brightness and resinous complexity, finishing with the dusty tannin texture that makes Barolo the 'King of Wines'.

Nebbiolo produces some of the world's most age-worthy and complex red wines, with Barolo being its most prestigious expression. The grape's naturally high acidity and robust tannin structure allow it to develop incredible complexity over decades, evolving from youthful power to elegant maturity. Its ability to express terroir so distinctly means each vineyard site produces wines with unique personality, making Nebbiolo a true reflection of place and time.

This wine's earthy, leather, and tarry characteristics make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include braised beef, wild game, aged cheeses like Gorgonzola or Parmigiano-Reggiano, and truffle-based dishes from Piedmont. The wine's mineral backbone and cranberry brightness also complement roasted lamb or duck, while its resinous complexity pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto or osso buco.

While this 2020 is already showing beautiful development with its rim brightening and integrated tannins, Barolo typically reaches its peak after 8-15 years from vintage. The wine's current dusty tannin finish suggests it will continue to soften and develop more tertiary aromatics over the next 5-10 years. However, the cranberry brightness and resinous complexity make it quite approachable now for those who enjoy Barolo's youthful power and structure.
