Why do we love this wine?

In Piedmontese dialect, "Crutin" refers to a small cellar hewn from rock, traditionally used for storing food and wine at optimal temperatures - a fitting name for this traditional winemaking operation. Hand-harvested in mid to late October to ensure noble ripening of skins and seeds, spontaneous fermentation occurs naturally before brief maceration of just 6-7 days. This shorter skin contact preserves the fruit's crispness and drinkability rather than extracting maximum tannin. Aging takes place in both oak barrels and stainless steel tanks before bottling. The approach here prioritises expressivity and approachability over austerity - giving you nebbiolo's distinctive character without the decade-long wait!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Langhe Nebbiolo uses a deliberately approachable winemaking style with only 6-7 days of skin contact, compared to the weeks-long macerations typical in Barolo. The shorter extraction preserves fruit freshness and creates a medium-bodied wine that's ready to drink now, rather than requiring the decade of cellaring that premium Piedmont wines usually demand. It's Nebbiolo's distinctive character without the wait - perfect for discovering the grape's cherry, violet and earthy complexity in a more accessible format.

In Piedmontese dialect, 'Crutin' refers to small rock-hewn cellars used for optimal food and wine storage - a nod to traditional Alpine preservation methods. This name reflects Manzone Giovanni's connection to local heritage and their boutique approach to winemaking. The reference suggests they value time-honoured techniques while adapting them for modern accessibility, much like how they've made this Nebbiolo approachable while maintaining its regional character.

The wine's textured, savoury profile with cherry and plum notes makes it ideal for classic Piedmontese cuisine like tajarin pasta with white truffles or brasato al Barolo. The medium body and approachable tannins also pair beautifully with roasted game birds, aged cheeses like Gorgonzola, or even pizza with mushrooms and prosciutto. The violet aromatics add an elegant floral lift that complements herb-crusted lamb or pork dishes.

The 2023 vintage represents extremely recent winemaking, with grapes hand-harvested in late October for optimal ripeness. This young vintage showcases the producer's philosophy of immediate drinkability - the wine displays fresh fruit character and vibrant acidity typical of recently bottled Nebbiolo. While many Piedmont wines from this vintage are still developing, this approachable style means you're experiencing the grape's pure, unadulterated expression at its most energetic and fruit-forward stage.

The dual aging approach balances tradition with modernity - oak barrels provide subtle spice notes and gentle tannin integration that Nebbiolo loves, while stainless steel preserves the bright cherry and violet aromatics that make this wine so appealing young. This technique allows the winemaker to add complexity without overwhelming the fruit, creating a wine that shows both the grape's inherent elegance and just enough oak influence to add structure and depth without masking Nebbiolo's distinctive terroir expression.
