Marananga is Barossa’s power zone, and this bottle wears it proudly. Deep, savoury and single-site focused, it drinks like a proper insider’s pick. The definition of boutique from a small batch, single vineyard producer with pedigree for days.

Why do we love this wine?

This Marananga Mataro comes out of one of the Barossa’s most premium, tightly held pockets. Marananga sits in the north-west of the valley floor and is famous for producing some of the region’s most powerful, concentrated reds thanks to its warm, dry conditions and rich red-brown clay loam soils. That pedigree shows in the glass with dark berry fruit, savoury spice and earthy depth, all carried by a strong, confident structure. It feels small-batch and deliberate, with a real sense of place rather than generic Barossa bigness. If you want a red with serious Barossa credentials and that extra Marananga muscle, this one delivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mataro, also known as Mourvèdre, is a robust Mediterranean variety that thrives in Australia's warm climates like the Barossa Valley. Unlike lighter reds, Mataro produces intensely coloured, full-bodied wines with distinctive earthy and spicy characteristics. This variety is prized for its ability to retain acidity even in hot conditions, creating wines with excellent structure and aging potential.

The Barossa Valley's warm, dry climate and ancient soils provide perfect conditions for Mataro to reach full phenolic ripeness. The region's Mediterranean-like conditions mirror Mataro's native southern France, allowing the variety to develop its signature spicy complexity while maintaining the robust tannin structure. Single vineyard expressions from the Barossa often showcase the unique terroir characteristics that make each site distinctive.

The rich plum fruit, liquorice depth, and warming clove spices make this Mataro perfect for hearty Mediterranean cuisine and grilled meats. Try it with lamb tagine, beef bourguignon, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's full body and spicy complexity can complement robust flavours. The wine's structure also pairs beautifully with game meats and dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme.

Serve this Mataro at 16-18°C to allow its complex spice and fruit flavours to fully express themselves. While the 2023 vintage is drinking beautifully now, Mataro's robust tannin structure means it will continue developing for 8-12 years with proper cellaring. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place to preserve the wine's exceptional 95-point quality and allow its flavours to integrate further.

The exceptional 95-point Wine Orbit rating places this Mataro among Australia's finest examples of the variety, indicating outstanding complexity and craftsmanship. Combined with its single vineyard status and boutique producer credentials, these accolades suggest meticulous vineyard management and winemaking. Such high ratings for a 2023 vintage also indicate the wine has achieved remarkable balance and expression despite its youth.
