Why do we love this wine?

Stick your nose in the glass and you'll see what we're on about - dark berries, cake spice, and a little smokiness for good measure, all supported by a good lick of cedary oak. It’s deep, layered and alluring as all-get-out - the kind of wine that makes you pause mid-conversation and go, “oh, sh*t - that’s good". On the palate, it’s all concentration and confidence. Plush dark fruit with a fine structure, spice and a savoury edge that gives it real class. It’s powerful, but it’s classy too - no shouting, just quite command. In short: This wine doesn’t ask to be noticed - it demands it. A bottle that’ll make any dinner, date or quiet night in feel like a grand occasion.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Maverick Shiraz showcases the exceptional terroir of Ahrens' Creek vineyard in the Barossa, where the Paulsen clone of Shiraz develops distinctive characteristics. The combination of dark berry concentration, cake spice complexity, and cedary oak integration reflects both the warm Barossa climate and careful winemaking. Its 96-point Wine Orbit rating places it among the elite tier of Australian Shiraz, demonstrating how specific vineyard sites can elevate this variety beyond typical regional expressions.

With its full-bodied structure, concentrated fruit, and quality oak integration, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The 2022 growing season in Barossa produced wines with good natural acidity and tannin structure, essential for long-term ageing. While delicious now, the wine will develop greater complexity and tertiary flavours like leather and earth over the next decade, with the plush fruit gradually integrating with the savoury elements.

The wine's powerful yet classy profile makes it ideal for rich, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity without being overwhelmed. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison. The savoury edge and spice notes also complement Middle Eastern cuisine, particularly dishes with cumin and coriander, while the plush fruit can handle the richness of duck confit or mature hard cheeses.

The Paulsen clone is prized for producing Shiraz with exceptional colour density and concentrated flavours, which explains this wine's deep, layered character. Originally selected in the Barossa decades ago, this clone typically yields smaller berries with thicker skins, contributing to the wine's intense dark fruit profile and structured tannins. It's particularly well-suited to warm climates like the Barossa, where it maintains good acidity while developing the rich, spicy characteristics evident in this bottle.

The cedary oak mentioned in the tasting notes suggests careful use of quality French or American oak barrels that complement rather than dominate the fruit. This oak treatment adds structural backbone and vanilla-spice complexity while allowing the Shiraz's natural dark berry flavours to shine through. The integration level indicates the wine has had sufficient time to marry the oak with the fruit, creating that sophisticated balance between power and elegance that defines premium Barossa Shiraz.
