If you're a fan of Barossa shiraz or even bigger styles of McLaren Vale shiraz, you're going to absolutely love this wine. This was built to honour the climate and terroir of one of Australia's most-highly-rated shiraz regions – Wrattonbully. Be warned: This is not for the faint of heart...

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Specifically crafted to showcase the 'Cavelands' sub-region with its layers of Terra Rossa soils, limestone caves, pristine waters and maritime climate that makes this place so bloody special. Big, bold, full-bodied and loaded with dark fruits. This is an intense, fruit-driven beast with abundant juicy red fruit flavours and a rich, round palate that doesn't mess around. Lingering dark fruits, pepper spice and overt oak complete the picture, delivering a balanced and seriously impressive finish. Made for carnivores who like their reds powerful and their meals substantial. Any cut of meat you choose to throw at it – ribeye, lamb chops, slow-cooked beef – this shiraz will be its best mate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Cavelands sub-region of Wrattonbully features unique Terra Rossa soils layered over limestone caves, creating exceptional drainage and mineral complexity. This geological foundation, combined with the maritime climate and pristine underground waters, produces Shiraz with distinctive intensity and structure. The limestone influence adds natural acidity that balances the region's naturally powerful fruit expression, while the Terra Rossa soils contribute to the wine's deep colour and concentrated flavours.

As a 2024 release, this Shiraz represents the modern trend of crafting wines for earlier enjoyment while maintaining aging potential. The full-bodied structure and overt oak suggest it's built for both immediate pleasure and medium-term cellaring. Young Shiraz from quality regions like Wrattonbully typically shows primary fruit intensity now, but will develop secondary characters like leather, earth, and integrated spice over 5-8 years.

Merite has achieved cult status by consistently producing exceptional wines that punch well above their price point, hence the 'Dangerous Value' rating. Cult producers typically have limited production, strong terroir expression, and a devoted following among wine enthusiasts. The combination suggests this Shiraz offers the quality and character you'd expect from much more expensive bottles, making it a smart buy for both drinking now and building a cellar.

While this powerful Shiraz excels with red meats, its pepper spice and dark fruit profile also complement rich game dishes like venison or duck. The wine's full body and oak integration make it excellent with aged hard cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, or even dark chocolate desserts. The maritime climate influence adds a subtle freshness that prevents it from overwhelming spiced lamb tagines or barbecued sausages with herbs.

Serve at 16-18°C to showcase the complex fruit and spice characters without masking the wine's structure with excessive warmth. Decant for 30-60 minutes to allow the overt oak to integrate and the dark fruits to open up fully. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place - the wine's intensity and structure suggest it will reward careful cellaring for 3-5 years, developing greater complexity while maintaining its bold character.
