A new staple. This lively shiraz showcases Mitolo's ability to create a point of interest in every wine. Initially bright and energetic with notes of violet and dark cherry but with underlying savoury aspects and fine tannins. A nuanced and thoroughly drinkable wine.

Why do we love this wine?

This year was all quality. 2022 brought a near-perfect growing season to McLaren Vale, a rare vintage that brings both high yields and also, concentrated, high quality fruit. The Lupo is a wine that shows us what McLaren Vale is all about - good fruit, put in good barrels, creating good wine. There's bright but dense plum and cherry flavours interwoven with seamless oak and pleasant lingering tannins. If you're a fan of Mitolo, or even the region in general, then this is one you've got to try.

Ken Gargett

"A fresh and delicious version of McLaren Vale Shiraz, this has a dark maroon colour. The nose gives us notes of chocolate, mocha, coffee grinds and bay leaves, along with some cassis and blackberries. Good complexity is already evident, the wine has a lovely plushness and there is a supple, creamy palate. Fine acidity, silky tannins, excellent balance and real persistence. Love it. A ten year proposition." - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.

Upfront and instantly appealing, the wine shows dark fruit richness, olive, tapenade, and toasted nut aromas. The weighty palate displays terrific fruit power backed by silky texture and polished tannins, finishing delectable and sturdy. Wonderfully composed and proportioned, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2038.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2022 vintage delivered a rare combination of high yields and concentrated, premium quality fruit - something winemakers dream of but rarely achieve. This near-perfect growing season allowed McLaren Vale producers like Mitolo to craft wines that truly showcase the region's potential. The exceptional conditions resulted in grapes with intense flavour concentration while maintaining the elegant balance that defines great Australian Shiraz.

The seamless oak integration in this wine demonstrates Mitolo's skilled barrel selection and timing. Rather than overwhelming the fruit, the oak weaves through the dense plum and cherry flavours, adding complexity without masking the varietal character. This approach allows the natural intensity of McLaren Vale Shiraz to shine while gaining structure and subtle spice notes that will develop beautifully over time.

This rich, full-bodied Shiraz with its black cherry and spice profile pairs magnificently with grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts. The wine's pleasant lingering tannins and black olive notes also complement aged cheeses and Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs and robust flavours. The density and structure make it ideal for slow-cooked dishes where the wine can match the intensity of the food.

Mitolo's recognition as a Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery and Mofo Fave Producer reflects their consistent ability to express McLaren Vale's terroir with precision and style. Their philosophy of 'good fruit, good barrels, good wine' might sound simple, but it requires exceptional vineyard management and winemaking expertise. The 95-point Wine Orbit rating for this Lupo demonstrates how they consistently deliver wines that capture the essence of their region.

With its full-bodied structure and well-integrated tannins, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. Over time, the bright fruit flavours will evolve into more complex secondary characters, while the tannins will soften and integrate further. The spice elements will become more pronounced, and the wine will develop the leather and earthy notes that make aged McLaren Vale Shiraz so distinctive and sought-after.
